FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Glenville State outlasted Fairmont State in a high-scoring battle for the top spot in the Mountain East Conference standings on Sunday afternoon, as the Pioneers drained 21 three-pointers and came away with a 125-111 victory over the Falcons at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
With the victory, GSC improves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in Mountain East Conference play, taking over sole possession of first place in the league standings. Fairmont State saw its five-game winning streak fall as the Falcons moved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Glenville State shot nearly 51 percent from the floor and went 21-of-41 from behind the arc in the victory.
The Pioneers saw each of their starters reach double-figures, including a game-high 35 points from Hegel Augustin. Augustin connected on eight 3-pointers in the game. GSC also got 31 points and 11 rebounds from Phil Bledsoe, while Steven Verplancken chipped in 19 points and 11 assists.
Fairmont State also played well on the offensive end, shooting 48 percent from the field with 10 three-pointers. However, the Falcons did most of their damage in the paint with 64 points from in close.
Dale Bonner paced the Falcons with 33 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Kenzie Melko-Marshall also chipped in 24 points and six rebounds, while
Cole VonHandorf added 18 points.
The Falcons will now prepare for a regional showdown against Shippensburg University in just over 48 hours on Tuesday evening inside Joe Retton Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
