GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Clarion scored five unanswered runs to rally past Fairmont State, 6-5, in extra innings on day one of the PSAC/MEC Crossover at the Sue Morris Sports Complex in Glenville on Thursday afternoon.
The loss drops Fairmont State's record to 5-2 on the season. Clarion improves to 4-4 on the year.
Tyler Skidmore put the Falcons on the board first by belting a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning to put the Falcons in front 2-0. After Clarion cut Fairmont State's lead in half in the top of the fourth,
Kevin Ayala and
Zach Musgrove hit RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to push Fairmont State's advantage to 5-1 after five innings of play.
The momentum shifted in the bottom of the eighth inning when Clarion's Thomas Lavin and Cole Shaffer drove in two runs apiece on doubles to tie the game at 5-5.
Nick Fugh provided the would-be game-winning run in the top of the 10
th inning on an RBI single to left field that scored Chandler Palyas from third.
The Falcons had a runners on first and second following a walk and a single by Tex Cobb in the bottom of the 10
th inning before the Golden Eagles recorded the final out of the inning to preserve the win in extra innings.
Will Brown started the game and gave up just one run on five hits in six innings of work before Fairmont State went to the pen. Brown struck out six batters in the start.
Mark McKee suffered the loss after pitching the final two innings and surrendering the game-winning run.
Dereck Pritchard (3-0) earned the pitching decision for Clarion, picking up his third win of the season.
Tyler Skidmore had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Joe Larocca also went 2-of-5 for the Falcons.
Fairmont State will return to action on Friday morning against Millersville. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m.
