SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - Fairmont State overcame nine lead changes and three ties and survived a late run by Notre Dame College to pick up a 71-64 win on Saturday afternoon inside the Murphy Gymnasium.
The Falcons led by as many as 13 at the 4:49 mark of the fourth quarter following a jumper by
Sierra Kotchman, and then held off a late surge that saw NDC pull to within four points on two occasions during the final 2:04 of the game. Notre Dame used a 13-4 scoring run in the fourth quarter to cut Fairmont's lead to 66-62 at the 2:04 mark.
In the final 2:04 of the game, Fairmont State went 5-of-6 from the free throw line and allowed just one more field goal to lock up the 71-64 win.
The win gives Fairmont State a regular season sweep over Notre Dame, as the Falcons improved to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in Mountain East Conference play. NDC dropped to 12-10 overall and 7-9 in the league.
Sierra Kotchman bucketed 27 points, including 17 in the second half to pace Fairmont State. Kotchman went 10-of-19 from the field, and 5-of-11 from three in the win.
Kamrin Weimer also scored 14 in the win, while
Rachel Laskody tallied eight points and eight rebounds in the post for the Falcons.
Presley Tuttle tallied eight points off the bench.
Fairmont State shot 9-of-22 from behind the arc and also converted on 16-of-21 free throw attempts in the win.
Jada Marone led the effort for Notre Dame with 19 points off the bench. Seina Adachi chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds, while Jessie Stout added eight boards to go with five points for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame outscored Fairmont State 40-22 in the paint, but the home team made just 4-of-20 attempts from behind the arc.
The Falcons will return home on Thursday evening to host UVa-Wise in MEC action. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
