FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State made 14 three-pointers and rolled to an 89-78 win over Shepherd University on Saturday afternoon during senior day at Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State's seniors combined for 60 points during the victory.
The win is Fairmont State's fourth in a row as the Falcons will return to action on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. as the No. 2 seed in the Mountain East Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Wheeling. The Falcons will meet the winner of Shepherd and UVa-Wise's first round matchup on Wednesday evening. The Falcons ended the regular season with a 21-7 overall record, including an 18-4 mark in MEC play.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Fairmont State men's basketball program honored its four seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four seasons. Fairmont's senior class includes
Jason Jolly,
Vonte Montgomery,
R.J. Hutcherson, and
Vince Franklin.
The Rams scored the opening basket with Derek McKnight's jumper but
Jason Jolly answered with a 3-pointer for the Falcons and Fairmont State would lead the rest of the way.
Fairmont State took a 48-39 lead into the locker room after
Kenzie Melko-Marshall drained a three from midcourt as time expired in the half. The Falcons extended the lead to as many as 19 in the second half, leading by double-digits for the final 20 minutes of play.
Montgomery led the effort for Fairmont State with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Hutcherson also netted 19, followed by Melko and Jolly scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. Jolly also passed out seven assists and Franklin chipped in seven points on senior day.
Fairmont State scored 11 points off of turnovers and 16 second-chance points to help secure the win. The Falcons also shot 47 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from behind the arc.
McKnight paced Shepherd (13-15, 9-13 MEC) with 21 points and six rebounds in the loss. Thomas Lang and Devin Smith chipped in 18 points apiece for the Rams.
