WHEELING, W.Va. – Fairmont State allowed just three runs in a doubleheader sweep of Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday afternoon at the JB Chambers Complex in Wheeling.
Hannah Absalom allowed just one run (unearned) and four hits in a 3-1 victory in game one, before
Darby Petersen pitched a complete game in game two, allowing just two runs, to pick up her second-consecutive victory.
Following the doubleheader sweep, Fairmont State improves to 22-18 overall and 16-10 in Mountain East Conference play. WJU falls to 7-35 overall and 4-20 in the league.
Game 1
In the first inning of game one,
Haley McDaniel led off the game with a triple to right field to put herself in scoring position early in the game. During the next at-bat,
Kaylee Andersen singled to right field to bring McDaniel home for the opening run of the game. After
Courtney Worcester singled to right field to move Andersen over to third,
Kadi Cosgrove hit a sacrifice fly to put the Falcons in front by a 2-0 margin.
After Wheeling Jesuit got one run back in the bottom of the third, Fairmont State's
Heidi Hormell wrapped up the scoring in the top of the fourth on an RBI single through the right side that brought home
Jessie Weaver.
Absalom improved to 13-7 with the victory, allowing just one unearned run on four hits in the win. The senior struck out three in the age.
Worcester went 3-for-3 in the game, while
Carly Clarke added a 2-for-3 performance.
Game 2
Fairmont State once again opened up a 2-0 lead in game two of the day when
Katlynn Foltz hit a two-RBI double to left center to clear the bases and break the scoreless tie.
Wheeling Jesuit's Alaina York knotted the game at 2-2 followign a triple to right center that scored a pair of runs for the Cardinals.
The game remained knotted at 2-2 until the top of the sixth when
Meadow Anderson scored an unearned run on a Wheeling Jesuit error to give the Falcons the lead for good.
Anderson gave the Falcons some breathing room in the top of the seventh on a single through the right side that scored two more runs, giving Fairmont State a 5-2 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, Petersen and the Fairmont State defense put the Cardinals down 1-2-3 to lock up the win.
Worcester once again went 3-for-3 in game two, scoring two runs in the win. Anderson also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Fairmont State will now be idle until Monday afternoon with a road doubleheader at West Liberty. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
