Trio of Home Runs Spark Doubleheader Sweep on Tuesday at Urbana

URBANA, Ohio -- The Fairmont State baseball team swept the final two games of its four-game series with Urbana, 6-5, 10-7, on Tuesday afternoon and took three of the four games in the Mountain East Conference series.
 
With the sweep and series victory, the Falcons improve to 22-18 overall and 13-11 in Mountain East Conference play. Urbana falls to 9-29 overall and 4-20 in the league.
 
Game 1
 
In game one on Tuesday, the Falcons opened 6-0 lead after the top of the third inning, and then held off a late push by Urbana to earn the victory.
 
Chris Green got the scoring started for the Falcons in the top of the second inning on a single to left center field that brought home Brooks Carr. Later in the inning Jordan Sanders scored following a steal attempt by Green that allowed Sanders to go from third to home.
 
In the top of the third with Fairmont State leading 2-0, Zach Musgrove belted a three-run home run to center field to bring home Kevin Ayala and Greg Yaksich to give the Falcons a commanding 5-0 lead. Green added his second RBI single of the game later in the third to make the score 6-0 in favor or of the Falcons.
 
Urbana plated five unanswered runs late in the game to make the final score 6-5 as Fairmont State held on for the win.
 
Will Brown (5-1) turned in a solid pitching performance for the Falcons, allowing just three earned runs on seven hits and striking out 10. Mark McKee earns the save after recording the final six outs of the game for the Falcons.
 
Game 2
 
The Falcons continued to perform well at the plate in game two, finishing the game with two more home runs and a trio of doubles in the 10-7 victory.
 
Fairmont State scored the first seven runs of the game and led 7-0 in the middle of the second inning. Musgrove got the scoring started in the top of the first on an RBI double that scored E.J. Trickett for the first run of the game. Tyler Skidmore added another RBI double later in the first inning, and then scored on a muffed throw by the Urbana second baseman to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead after one inning.
 
In the second Fairmont State added four more runs, starting with a sacrifice fly by Trickett that plated Green for the fourth run of the game. Musgrove added a two-run home run and Skidmore hit a solo home run later in the inning to push the Fairmont lead to 7-0 early.
 
After Urbana cut into the lead with two runs in the second, Texas Cobb scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third make the score 8-2.
 
Urbana once again cut into the lead with three runs in the third to make the margin 8-5, but the Falcons closed out the win with RBI singles by Kevin Ayala and Trickett in the fifth.
 
Urbana's Tyler Dellerman hit a two-run home run in the fifth to wrap up the scoring and make the final score 10-7 Fairmont.
 
Alex Pane earned his first victory of the season in the game two win, allowing just two earned runs on four hits in the win. Houston Morris recorded his fifth save of the season after pitching the final three innings of the game, allowing no hits and striking out two.
 
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday at West Liberty. Game one of the four-game series will begin at 1 p.m.
