SALEM, Va. -- Fairmont State downed Concord 4-1 during its 2019 Mountain East Conference Tournament opener to advance in the winner's bracket. The MEC Tournament victory is the first for the Falcons since the 2014 season when Fairmont State went 2-2 in Tournament play.

Following the win, the Falcons were scheduled to play West Liberty in one of two winner's bracket matchups on Friday evening, but play was suspended early in the evening due to wet weather. The Falcons and Hilltoppers will return to the field on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the James I. Mayer Complex in Salem.
On Friday afternoon the Falcons struck first in the top of the third inning on a
Kadi Cosgrove RBI single, but Concord managed to tie it up in the bottom half on a single from Jenna Witt.Â
Courtney Worcester put Fairmont State in front in the fifth on an infield single, and then
Katlynn Foltz provided some breathing room in the top half of the seventh with a two-run single in the gap to left center.Â
Fairmont State starter
Hannah Absalom (17-7), who was honored prior to the game after being voted a first team All-MEC selection, went the distance in the circle giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Absalom did not allow an extra-base hit in the game.

Cosgrove finished with three hits on the day and Worcester had two for the Falcons.Â
Laura Thompson took the loss for Concord lasting four innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits.
