CUMBERLAND, Md. – Fairmont State scored over 100 points for the third time this season on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 101-85 road victory over Frostburg State in Mountain East Conference action at Bob Kirk Arena on the campus of Allegany College of Maryland.
Fairmont State improved to 13-4 overall and 8-4 in MEC play. Frostburg fell to 7-11 overall and 4-8 in the league.
Fairmont State had five players reach double-figures on the evening, including a pair of 20-point scoring performances from
Kenzie Melko-Marshall and
Cole VonHandorf. Melko shot 7-of-10 from the field and finished with a team-high 22 points and six rebounds. VonHandorf shot 8-of-15 from the field and scored 21 points on the afternoon.
Dale Bonner and
Isaiah Sanders also chipped in 15 points apiece, while
Przemyslaw Golek finished with a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Bonner also passed out a team-high six assists.
Fairmont State shot nearly 47 percent from the field and drained 29-of-32 free throw attempts (90.6%) in the game. Frostburg shot just 22-of-32 (68.8%) from the free throw line as the teams combined for 64 free throw attempts and 50 personal fouls.
Fairmont State also turned in a strong defensive performance, forcing 23 Frostburg turnovers and holding a 28-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
Frostburg State got a game-high 32 points from Daniel Alexander. Torrin Stephens also chipped in a double-double for the Bobcats with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Frostburg held a 50-to-36 rebounding advantage.
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena when West Virginia State comes to town for an MEC contest. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
