URBANA, Ohio -- Fairmont State forced overtime late in the fourth quarter and outscored Urbana 16-9 in the extra session to win 105-98 on Saturday afternoon at the Grimes Center in Mountain East Conference action.
In the victory, Fairmont State senior guard
Rachel Laskody surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, becoming the 33
rd player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. Following her performance on Saturday, Laskody now has 1,009 points and 608 rebounds during her four-year career with the Falcons.
Urbana led 89-86 with just :11 seconds left, but
Sierra Kotchman drove and kicked to the wing to an open
Kamrin Weimer who hit from three to tie the game. Urbana advanced the ball and had :6 seconds to get off a shot, but a pass to the post was deflected by Fairmont State to keep the score tied and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Falcons scored the first five points on a
Brooke Kurucz three and Kotchman jumper. The Blue Knights got to within one at the 2:17 mark, but another layup from Laskody and a three from Kotchman gave the Falcons the lead it needed to control the game down the stretch.
With the victory, Fairmont State snapped its four-game losing streak and improved to 12-12 overall and 9-9 in MEC play. The Falcons are now in sole possession of sixth place in the MEC standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Urbana, who is in fifth place in the MEC standings after today's setback, goes to 15-9 overall and 11-7 in MEC play.
Fairmont State scored over 100 points for the fourth time this season and recorded a season-high 105 on the offensive end in the win. Fairmont State shot 43 percent from the field and made nine 3-pointers in the win.
Fairmont State had five double-figure scorers in the win, including a trio that recorded 20-point scoring performances. Kurucz led Fairmont State with 22 points and five rebounds. Kotchman finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, including 17 points in the second half and overtime. Weimer also registered 21 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Laskody chipped in 19 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots.
Taylor Duplaga also came off the bench and chipped in 12 points in the win.
Urbana's Tyra James led all scorers with 38 points to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. Sylvia Hudson also had over 30 points, totaling 31 and 15 rebounds on the afternoon.
The Blue Knights shot 44 percent from the field and sank 25-of-26 free throw attempts in the game.
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Wheeling University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
