GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held on for a 79-77 road victory over Glenville State on Wednesday night at the Waco Center in a key Mountain East Conference matchup.
With the victory, Fairmont State improves to 15-5 overall and 10-5 in league play. Glenville falls to 13-8 overall and 10-5 in MEC play.
A close game throughout, Glenville State rallied back from an eight-point deficit with a 15-6 run over a seven-minute span to grab a 71-70 lead with just 2:18 left. Ilisa Washington answered and ended the Falcon's drought with a three-pointer to put the Fairmont back in front. Fairmont pushed its lead to four at 76-72 with under a minute left after a
Cole VonHandorf jumper, but a pair of Phil Bledsoe free throws got the Pioneers back to within two.
Cole VonHandorf answered again for the Falcons by converted his free throw attempts to keep the margin at four with 18 seconds remaining.
Glenville State couldn't knock down a three on its next possession and Washington made 1-of-2 from the line to give the Falcons a five-point lead as the game entered the final 10 seconds of play. On the opposite end, Glenville's Hegel Augustin was able to convert a conventional three-point play to make it 79-77.
The Pioneers forced a turnover to get the ball back with 1.6 seconds remaining, but the GSC had trouble possessing the inbounds pass and couldn't get a shot off in the closing moments.
VonHandorf led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go with five rebounds.
Dale Bonner filled the box score with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Washington finished with 14.
Isaiah Sanders also chipped in eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals off the bench.
Fairmont State shot 43 percent from the field and drained nine 3-pointers in the road victory.
Augustin had a big double-double for the Pioneers with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Steven Verplancken scored 19 points, had eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Noah Frampton tossed in 11 more and also had seven rebounds.
GSC shot just 39 percent from the field, including a 9-of-34 performance from three-point range. In the Pioneers win over Fairmont back in December, GSC made 21 three-pointers and scored 125 points.
Fairmont State overcame a 50-38 rebounding deficit in tonight road win.
The Falcons will now return home to face Concord in MEC action on Saturday afternoon. Tip is set for 4 p.m. at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
