Kotchman, DeAngelo Lead Falcons During Fourth-Quarter Comeback at Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 29-13 in the fourth quarter to erase an 11-point deficit and rally past the Bobcats, 80-75, for the Falcons' first win of the season on Monday evening in Buckhannon.
 
Presley Tuttle tied the game at 72-72 with 1:56 remaining in the fourth, before Katy Darnell gave the Falcons the lead for good on the next possession on a jumper with just over a minute remaining. The Falcons were able to maintain their advantage in the final minute in large part to a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line to stretch the final margin to 80-75.
 
Sierra Kotchman scored 13 points and Alyssa DeAngelo added 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Falcons to the come-from-behind victory. The duo combined for 23 of Fairmont's 29 fourth-quarter points.
 
Fairmont State shot 62 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, including 10 points in the paint. The Falcons were also 12-of-15 from the free throw line in the final 10 minutes of action.
 
The Bobcats led for over 34 minutes on Monday evening, including a double-digit advantage at times before Fairmont State took over in the fourth quarter. The Falcons shot just 35 percent in the first quarter, 41 percent in the second quarter and 28 percent in the third quarter and faced a 62-51 deficit with 10 minutes remaining.
 
The Falcons had three double-figure scorers in the victory, including a pair of big performances by a pair of freshmen in the victory. Kotchman once again led the Falcons on the offensive end with 22 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. The Falcons also got a double-double from Jalen Gibbs with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow freshman (Alyssa) DeAngelo chipped in 13 points, three rebounds and two steals. Darnell just missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Jertaya Hall added seven points.
 
Fairmont State shot 40 percent from the field and scored 24 points off 17 Bobcat turnovers in the victory. The Falcons also got 35 points from their bench in the game.
 
Wesleyan (0-4, 0-4 MEC) got 22 points and 13 rebounds from Brittany Stawovy, while Symphonie Bryant-Brown chipped in 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists off the bench.
 
The Bobcats shot just under 44 percent from the field, but managed just 3-of-16 (18.8%) from the field in the final 10 minutes. Wesleyan also held a slim 42-41 rebounding advantage on the evening.
 
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Notre Dame College. Tip is set for 5 p.m. inside the Murphy Gymnasium in South Euclid.
