BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Eight players scored in double figures as 23rd-ranked Fairmont State ran away with a 110-85 win over West Virginia Wesleyan at the Rockefeller Center on Thursday night.
Cole VonHandorf led all scorers in the game with 18 points in the victory, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark with a 3-point field at the 1:55 mark of the opening half. He becomes the 52
nd player in program history to score over 1,000 points while wearing the maroon and white. VonHandorf also pulled down five rebounds to go with two assists and two steals in the win.
After missing their first nine field goals of the game, Fairmont State shot nearly 59 percent from the field the rest of the way and quickly built a double-digit lead it would not relinquish.
Trailing 7-0 early in the first half, Fairmont State finally got on the board at the 15:53 mark on a fast break layup from newcomer and James Madison transfer
Zyon Dobbs. Over the next five and a half minutes the Falcons got going with a 22-8 scoring run that included a 9-of-13 shooting performance and points from five different FSU scorers. The Falcons were sparked during the run by eight points from Dobbs and six points from
Przemyslaw Golek.
That seven-point advantage (22-15) stretched to double-digits following back-to-back threes by
Ilisia Washington and
Isaiah Sanders around the 7:55 mark, and Fairmont would stretch its first half lead to as many as 22 with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Falcons took a 54-36 lead into the locker room.
Because of the slow shooting start, the Falcons shot 45 percent in the first half.
Fairmont State continued to hit shots early in the second half and finished the final 20 minutes of play by shooting 60 percent from the field. The shooting performance resulted in 56 second-half points as FSU led by as many as 29 at the 6:04 mark late in the second. The Falcons later settled for the 110-85 win.
In addition to the shooting performance, the Falcons also held a 51-36 edge on the glass and turned 21 Wesleyan turnovers into 22 points on the opposite end – most of which were on the fast break. The Falcons also held a 30-16 advantage in second-chance points and dominated the paint with a 58-34 scoring advantage.
In addition to VonHandorf's milestone night,
Dale Bonner netted 15 points to go with four assists and three steals, and
Seth Younkin and Washington netted 13 points apiece for the Falcons. Sanders also scored 12, while Golek and
Andrew Mills each tossed in 11. Golek just missed a double-double by also pulling down nine rebounds to lead the Falcons on the glass. Dobbs finished with 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals in his FSU debut.
A trio of players had 12 points for WVWC, including Jaret Mullooly, Cameron Ramage and Ross Young.
