FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State football team took down Wheeling University 29-14 on Friday night in Mountain East Conference play.
Colin Harvath is now first all-time in career PATS with 133 makes as the Fairmont native Harvath was recognized prior to kickoff for senior night.
The Fighting Falcons finish their season 5-6 overall and 5-5 in MEC play while the Cardinals round out their regular season 5-6 and 5-5 in conference action.
On the second play from scrimmage,
Chrinovic Mukulu recovered a Wheeling fumble to put Fairmont State's offense in prime position to put points on the board early in the first quarter.
Michael Floria and the offense moved the ball down to the nine-yard line before Harvath came on for a 26 yard field goal to put the Falcons up 3-0 at the 10:53 mark.
On the next two offensive possessions, Floria threw two interceptions that Wheeling capitalized on for a touchdown as Chad Palmer found Jake Keenan 14 yards out for a score and the Cardinals gained the 7-3 lead with 4:23 left to play in the first quarter.
Fairmont State answered with a 16 play, 77-yard drive that resulted in three more points off the leg of Harvath with a defensive pass interference and a defensive offsides keeping the drive alive. Harvath chipped in from 20 yards out to cut the lead to 7-6 in favor of Wheeling.
Harvath added to his solid night with an onside kick and recovery of his own as the Falcons took over on their 49-yard line with 10:29 left to play in the first half. Fairmont State stalled on their next offensive possession but a 52-yard punt from
Dima Amaya pinned the Cardinals at their own nine-yard line for their next drive.
The Falcons forced a three-and-out and
Josh Nevers blocked the Matt Greenwood punt in the endzone that resulted in a safety for Fairmont State as they claimed an 8-7 advantage.
Fairmont State and Wheeling would trade possessions again before a drive start at 1:21 left in the second quarter for the Falcons. Floria connected with
Joshawn Lewis for a 50-yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds left to play and put the Maroon and White up on the scoreboard 15-7 with an extra point from Harvath.Â
In the start of the second half, Fairmont State used another solid drive that went 14 plays for 71 yards in 6:32 as Floria completed a pass to
Javon Hayes from four yards out to give the Falcons a 22-7 lead in the third quarter.
Wheeling would not go away as they answered quickly with a touchdown score from Palmer to Jaquan Davidson for a 14-yard hookup to cut the Falcon lead to 22-14 in the third quarter.
Fairmont State struck again off a touchdown pass on their next offensive possession as
Shawn Harris caught a touchdown pass from Floria to regain the 15-point advantage in the second half.
Wheeling had one more possession that crossed into Fairmont State but a combined sack from
Randy Robinson and Mukulu halted the Cardinals' drive 4:45 left in regulation. The Falcons held onto the ball for the remainder of the contest and took the final by a score of 29-14.
Fairmont State racked up 473 total yards of offense on 82 plays as they held Wheeling to 179 yards of total offense. The Falcons doubled up the Cardinals with 26 first downs to Wheeling's 13 and tallied 82 plays to the Cardinals 55 in the matchup.
Floria went 19-35 for 326 passing yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers in Hayes, Harris, and Lewis. Hayes collected eight receptions for 127 receiving yards and falls one reception shy of tying for eighth all-time in school history in career receptions (144).Â
Myles Miree led the rushing attack for the Falcons with 24 attempts on 97 rushing yards with his longest rush of 20 yards on the night.
The defense came up big in the win as well with Mukulu totaling three sacks on his senior night and added five total tackles to his season totals.
Brocton Blair had eight total tackles to lead the defense and one sack as well.
The Fighting Falcons completed their season on a two-game win streak with wins over Glenville State and Wheeling to bring their conference record to 5-5. Fairmont State went 3-2 in games at Duvall-Rosier Field as 12 football seniors wrapped up their careers playing for Fairmont State.
