Concord Scores Late over Fairmont State in MEC Semifinals

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Concord's Courtney Smith scored in the 88th minute to net the 2-1 victory against Fairmont State on Friday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference women's soccer semifinals. Ari Christiansen tied the match in the 72nd minute of play for the Fighting Falcons off an assist from Jessica Schneider.

The Falcons end their season at 8-8-3 and 7-6-3 in the MEC with Concord advancing to the MEC Finals on Sunday in which they either face Frostburg State or Charleston.

Kiera Kuzinski had a quick shot on target in the second minute of the first half as Concord's Leah Marsh collected her first save of the contest. The two sides continued a back and forth game of possession with Taylor Kennedy having six saves in the first half of regulation. The Mountain Lions and Falcons went into the halftime break knotted at zero at the YMCA Paul Kline Complex.

In the start of the second period, the Mountain Lions fired two shots on goal but Kennedy was game again as had her seven and eight saves on the contest. Concord would get on the board on their next shot when Yasmin Cosby found the back of the net in the 58th minute to fetch the one goal advantage.

The Fighting Falcons would not go away as Christiansen scored off a free kick from Schneider to even the match at one in the 72nd minute of action. Fairmont State continued the offensive pressure as Kuzinski had another shot on goal but the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net in the rest of the contest.

Concord had 14 shots with 12 shots on target and Fairmont State accumulated six shots total with four shots on goal. Kuzinski had three shots on goal on the afternoon with Christiansen notching her third goal on the season.

Fairmont State women's soccer finished their season with a record of 8-8-3 and earned the second seed entering the MEC Tournament with a win over Notre Dame on Tuesday night to advance to today's contest with Concord. Four Falcons earned All-MEC accolades with Kuzinski and Christiansen being named tor First Team All-MEC and Kennedy earning All-MEC Second Team. Emily Wallon joined her teammates as she was honored on the All-MEC Freshman Team.
