FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- On Saturday afternoon, Fairmont State men's basketball used a strong second half effort to propel them to an 89-55 over the visitors from Edinboro as the Joe Retton Classic tipped off inside Joe Retton Arena.
The Fighting Scots opened the game on an 8-0 run before
Cole VonHandorf hit a three-pointer to get the Fighting Falcons on the board and
Zyon Dobbs trimmed the lead even more with a three of his own at the 16:58 mark in the first half.Â
Dobbs collected another three to put Fairmont State in front, 11-8, and the Falcons would not let Edinboro regain the lead throughout the rest of the contest.
Isaiah Sanders drained a three-pointer off a fastbreak and assist from Dobbs to push the Falcon lead to 32-20 as Fairmont State closed the half on 10-2 run to take the 45-35 advantage into the halftime break.
The Falcons continued their strong play as they started the second half with 11 consecutive points before Edinboro lifted the lid of the basket at the 15:50 mark of the second half. The Fighting Scots cut the lead to 10 points before the Falcons bumped the margin back to 20 points at the 7:55 mark with Dobbs adding another three to his game totals.
The Falcons cruised the rest of the way as they picked up the 89-55 to start their 2021-2022 season campaign in front of a crowd inside Joe Retton Arena.
Sanders led all scorers with 22 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor and collecting three three-pointers on the evening. Dobbs followed his Falcon teammate with 17 points in the contest and
Przemyslaw Golek and Myle Monroe each chipped in 12 points.
Seth Younkin was big on the boards with 13 rebounds, all on the defensive end, and two assists to go along with four points in the game.
The Falcons shot 40% from the field (30-75) and knocked in 16 three-pointers in the season opener with 13 makes at the free-throw line as well.
Fairmont State held Edinboro to 33.9% on the night and only allowed the Fighting Scots to make five three-pointers out of 16 inside Joe Retton Arena.
Fairmont State men's basketball (1-0, 0-0 MEC) hosts in-state foe Salem University (0-1) tomorrow night at 6 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena to close out the weekend.
