FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State women's basketball separated themselves early in the first quarter and downed the Golden Eagles of Clarion 92-68 on Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic Region Women's Basketball Crossover Tournament hosted by Fairmont State University.
Clarion picked up seven straight points before the Fighting Falcons woke up and answered with a 7-0 run of their own with
Alyssa DeAngelo capping the point streak with a fastbreak layup at the 5:40 mark in the first period. Fairmont State gained their first lead at 10-9 off a free throw make from
Madeline Huffman and closed the first with a 20-4 advantage after the contest was tied at nine with 5:16 to play.Â
Clarion was able to get one point closer in the second half as both sides went into the halftime break with the Falcons up 50-35 inside Joe Retton Arena.
The Falcons continued the momentum in the second half with Fairmont State pushing their lead to 20 points with 6:17 left in third quarter of action and closed the quarter at 70-51 advantage. The Maroon and White continued their dominance on the floor with a final score of 92-68 on Saturday afternoon.
Fairmont State went 33-72 (45.8%) from the floor and was 8-24 from three-point range. The Falcons also knocked 18 out of 19 free throws on the day with
Katy Darnell going 6-6 from the charity stripe. Fairmont State held Clarion to 40.6% from the field and held the advantage in bench points (43-21).
Darnell came off the bench and tallied 22 points on 8-13 shooting and six rebounds as DeAngelo and Kotchman following with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Jertaya Hall rounded the Falcons in double figures with 12 points going 4-8 from the field.
Fairmont State women's basketball (1-0, 0-0 MEC) returns to Joe Retton Arena tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to take on Winston-Salem State (0-1, 0-0) to wrap up the weekend in the Atlantic Region Women's Basketball Crossover Tournament.
