CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- In a battle of two undefeated teams, Fairmont State came out on top, 95-92, over California University of Pennsylvania on Thursday evening.
With 50 seconds to play,
Briggs Parris hit the go-ahead three-pointer to put the Fighting Falcons up 89-88 against the Vulcans. The Falcons knocked converted free throws to give the final score of 95-92 in favor of Fairmont State.
Parris led the Falcons with 27 points on the contest scoring nine baskets with four coming from beyond the arc.
Isaiah Sanders followed Parris with another 20-point night collecting 26 points on 10-19 shooting and
Zyon Dobbs chipped in 20 points on 8-13 shooting.
Cole VonHandorf joined his teammates in double figures with 10 points on five made baskets.
The two sides went back and forth trading made shots early in the first half before Dobbs hit a three-pointer to push the Falcon lead to 34-29 against the Vulcans. The Vulcans regained the lead with 2:07 left to play in the first period at 45-44. Parris answered with a shot from beyond the arc as the Fighting Falcons went into the half up 49-47 on Thursday evening.
Out of the locker room, the two teams traded the lead a couple of more times before Cal U staked out to a three-point lead off a jumper from Philip Alston at 53-50. The Falcons retook the lead a little over a minute later as Dobbs knocked in another three to put Fairmont State on top 55-53.
The Vulcans took the lead once more as Alston put away a dunk on a fastbreak opportunity and Cal (PA) had the 64-62 advantage with 12:06 left in the second half. The Vulcans went on a 12-point run to send their lead to nine points at 71-62 before Fairmont State answered once again.
The Fighting Falcons found themselves down by two points with 1:25 left in regulation after a made layup from Sanders. On the ensuing possession,
Seth Younkin stole the ball away and Parris buried a three to give the Falcons the 89-88 lead with 50 seconds remaining.
Brent Pegram scored a three-pointer late to make the lead one point in favor of Fairmont State, but Sanders converted on two more free throws to ice the game and give the Falcons their third straight win to start the season.
Fairmont State shot the ball well on the night with 35 makes on 68 attempts (51.5%) as they had 11 three-pointers in the fixture. The Vulcans were 37-79 (46.8%) from the field as they outrebounded the Falcons by 13 boards.
Fairmont State men's basketball (3-0, 0-0 MEC) returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they begin Mountain East Conference play at Davis & Elkins (1-2, 0-0 MEC). Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside the McDonnell Center.
