FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State women's volleyball program picked up a Mountain East Conference victory over Notre Dame in three sets (25-19,25-19,25-13) inside Joe Retton Arena on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Fighting Falcons improve to 19-8 overall and 9-4 in MEC play while NDC is now 15-13 and 6-7 in MEC action.
The Maroon and White were working on all cylinders tonight as they outhit Notre Dame .361 to .070 with 39 kills for Fairmont and 33 for NDC.
In the first set, the Fighting Falcons got the momentum rolling with three consecutive points early and pushed their lead to seven with four straight points after a Notre Dame at 11-4. Fairmont State did not allow Notre Dame to get any closer than five points down the stretch as
Julia DiPaola finished off a kill for the 25-19 set win.
The score would be identical in the second set as the Fighting Falcons rattled off four straight points off their own to hold the 7-3 score. Fairmont State added cushion to their lead with five consecutive points after a point from NDC to make the score at 12-4 in favor of the Maroon and White.
Emily Cordle and
Nyla Birch teamed up for a block to finish the 25-19 set victory and the Fighting Falcons held the 2-0 set advantage.
At the beginning of the third set,
Keara Lewis guided the Falcons to three consecutive points with Fairmont State in control of the match. Lewis finished the third set with another kill to give Fairmont the sweep over Notre Dame.
Lewis had a match-high 12 kills for Fairmont State with
Emma Ludwig following with nine kills.
Amelia Moore added six total kills to her season and
Julia DiPaola tallied six kills on the evening.
Lilianna Keber continued her dominant season with 32 assists on the night and chipped in seven digs on the contest.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Karli Edwards led Fairmont State with 12 digs as DiPaola collected eight in the match win.
Emily Cordle controlled seven blocks at the net with Lewis and Ludwig adding four apiece.
Fairmont State women's volleyball (19-8, 9-4 MEC) will be looking for their third win in a row when they head to the campus of Alderson Broaddus University to face AB (6-14, 2-11 MEC) on Friday night inside Rex Pyles Arena.
