FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- On Tuesday night, Fairmont State Men's Basketball used a big second half to pull away from West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats with the final score of 96-58 in favor of the Fighting Falcons.
The Falcons are now 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Mountain East Conference action while WVWC is now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Fairmont State also jumped to the 10th spot in the National Association Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll today as they climbed from their preseason ranking of 22nd.
Fairmont State opened the game with nine straight points before the Bobcats scored their first basket of the night. The Falcons extended the lead to 10 points off a made layup from
George Mangas with 14:31 remaining in the first half.
WVWC slashed the Falcon lead in half to 17-12 but Fairmont State answered quickly with six points to push the lead back to eleven at 23-12 on a made layup from
Briggs Parris. The Bobcats got within single digits once more at the ten-minute mark before the Falcons picked up the intensity and went into the break, up 46-30 after a
Isaiah Sanders' dunk with 29 seconds left in the first half.
In the second half, West Virginia Wesleyan chipped away at the Falcon lead with five early points before Fairmont State went on an 18-0 run to take control of the game with 13:17 left in regulation.
The Falcons cruised the remainder of the game as they picked up their second MEC victory of the season with the final score being 96-58 inside Joe Retton Arena.
Fairmont State shot the ball at a 51.4% (38-74) clip while holding the Bobcats to a shooting percentage of 33.8% on the night. The Falcons added 12 three-pointers to their season totals as well.
Przemyslaw Golek led all scorers on the night with 20 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor with six threes in the contest. Golek was followed teammate Sanders who had 18 points on seven made shots and
Zyon Dobbs collected 13 points in the matchup.
Cole VonHandorf rounded out the Falcons in double-digits with 11. 11 Fairmont State players picked up at least three points as each player had one or made shots who entered the game for the Fighting Falcons.
#10 Fairmont State (5-0, 2-0 MEC) returns after the Thanksgiving break to face the University of Charleston (4-1, 2-0 MEC) on Wednesday, December 1st. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside the Wehrle Innovation Center.
