FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State's
Sierra Kotchman reached a pair of milestones in a lopsided 97-53 victory over Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon during senior day at Joe Retton Arena.
Â
Kotchman's 26-point performance helped her surpass former Shepherd University standout Morgan Arden to become the career scoring leader in the Mountain East Conference women's basketball record book. Kotchman also became the first player in MEC history and third player in Fairmont State history to score 2,000 career points.
Â
Arden's career ended in 2018 with 1,995 points.
Â
Kotchman currently has 2,004 points and ranks third in Fairmont State history in career scoring. She trails Kristin Gattuso (2,041) and Kaitlyn Snyder (2,056) on the career scoring list.
Â
Kotchman's big day was just a small part of the Fairmont State success on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Falcons shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc in the win. The Falcons also forced 25 turnovers on the defensive end and scored 23 points off turnovers.
Â
Frostburg, on the other hand, struggled from the field, shooting just 36 percent – including a 1-of-11 performance from three.
Â
In addition to a game-high 26 points from Kotchman, the Falcons also got 15 points from
Jertaya Hall and 12 apiece from
Katy Darnell and
Jalen Gibbs. Gibbs and senior
Erin Danik each pulled down seven boards to lead the Falcons on the glass.
Â
Prior to Saturday's game, the Falcons honored Danik and
Presley Tuttle, who each played their final regular season game inside Joe Retton Arena on Saturday.
Â
Ciara Thomas was the lone double-figure scorer for Frostburg State with 18 points to go with eight rebounds.
Â
Fairmont State has clinched the No. 4 seed in the MEC Tournament after finishing the year with a 7-9 overall record. The Falcons will open MEC Tournament play on Monday evening by hosting Alderson Broaddus in a 4/5 matchup at Joe Retton Arena. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
