FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Charleston used a strong shooting performance to earn its second-straight win over a ranked opponent on Wednesday evening, downing 21
st-ranked Fairmont State, 85-70, at Joe Retton Arena.
The Golden Eagles, who came into the game off a home victory over No. 9 West Liberty, improved to 7-2 on the year. The Falcons slip to 4-2 on the year.
The Golden Eagles shot a scorching 68 percent and hit 10 three-pointers in the first half as they took a 49-29 lead into the locker. UC also controlled the glass on the night holding a 34-22 edge in rebounds.
Fairmont State shot just 41 percent from the field and couldn't overcome UC's first-half shooting performance in the second half. Fairmont State did pressure the Golden Eagles into 19 turnovers.
Fairmont State was led by a 22-point and five rebounds performance from
Isaiah Sanders in the loss.
Zyon Dobbs also had 14 points, and
Dale Bonner scored 13 points to go with four assists before fouling out. The Falcons also got 10 points from
Przemyslaw Golek and seven from
Cole VonHandorf.
Eddie Colbert has 23 points and seven rebounds for Charleston. Keith Williams also had 14 points, and point guard Seth O'Neal had 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Lamont McManus chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
Fairmont State will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon with a tough road challenge at West Virginia State. Tip is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Walker Convocation Center.
