Volleyball Rallies Past Notre Dame In Five-Set Thriller

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State volleyball team took three-straight sets after falling behind 2-0 to earn a key Mountain East Conference North victory in five sets (22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12) on Friday evening at Joe Retton Arena.

With NDC up 1-0 following a 25-22 win in set one, FSU looked to be well on its way to a set-two victory leading 23-17 following a kill by Keara Lewis. However, Notre Dame reeled-off eight-straight points with Carly Emerson serving to grab the come-from-behind win in the set.

Down 2-0, Fairmont State regrouped and took the final three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 15-12. A big change for FSU in sets three through five was much more efficiency on the attack. Fairmont State committed 19 errors in the first two sets, compared to just 15 in the final three sets.

Statistically, Fairmont State held a slight edge in nearly every category, including a 69-52 advantage in kills, a 9-7 advantage in total blocks, and a 100-92 edge in total digs. Both teams tallied 10 aces in the match.

Fairmont State had several players contribute during the victory, including a team-high 23 kills from Keara Lewis. Lewis also chipped in 10 digs and six block assists for the Falcons. In addition, Fairmont got a big day out of Taylor Wisniewski with 15 kills and six block assists. Emily Cordle was the third Falcon to surpass double-figures in kills with 11 in the win. Amelia Moore and Julia DiPaola also made their presence felt on the attack with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Setter Lilianna Keber finished just one assist shy of her career-high as the junior finished the match with 55 assists and a team-best 32 digs. Kelsey Moeller also racked up 24 digs in the match, while sophomore libero Bryce Knapp finished the evening with 17. Madison Chapman also added 11 digs.

Kelsie Palmer and Kaye Dregalla paced Notre Dame in the five-set thriller with 12 kills apiece. Destinee Harris was strong around the net with six total blocks (three solo).

Fairmont State will hit the road for the first time this season next Tuesday with a trip to West Liberty. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
