INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Fairmont State's Mountain East Conference Tournament run came to an end on Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to No. 21-ranked Wheeling University in the tournament championship match (25-15, 25-16, 25-19).
Wheeling took him its eighth-straight Mountain East Conference title in volleyball on Saturday night at the Walker Convocation Center.
The two teams split the regular season matchups this season, including Fairmont State snapping Wheeling's record for consecutive conference victories. However, it was Wheeling that won the final game of this spring season.
The Cardinals (11-2) hit an impressive .350 in the match with 48 kills and just seven errors. Fairmont State hit .205 in the match with 40 kills and 16 errors. Each team had 56 digs and eight blocks, and Wheeling came up with five service aces in the match.
Amelia Moore had 11 kills to lead Fairmont State, who finished the season with 10-3 overall record.
Keara Lewis and
Julia DiPaola each added nine kills apiece. Lewis and DiPaola also tallied 10 digs apiece for the Falcons.
Lilliana Keber had 25 assists and 10 digs, and
Bryce Knapp had 14 digs for the Falcons from her libero position.
DiPaola and Knapp were named to the MEC All-Tournament Team after leading the Falcons to the championship match during this week's tournament.
Wheeling's Karly Niesen led the offense setting 43 assists on the 48 kills. Kayla Bekier notched 18 kills, and Lexi Smith had 14. Audrey Francis posted 16 digs.
