FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State put up 16 runs in game one on Saturday afternoon and never looked back in a doubleheader sweep against Alderson Broaddus, 16-5, 5-0, at Duvall-Rosier Field.
With the victories, Fairmont State improves to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the league. AB falls to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Game 1
The Falcons had nine players record a hit in the game one victory, including a 3-for-3 performance from
Courtney Worcester, who also drove in a pair of runs.
Andie Baughman hit 2-for-4 in game one with a home runs and four runs batted-in.
Kadi Cosgrove also recorded a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Falcons. Cosgrove,
Molly Schweitzer and
Caitlyn Kassay each hit doubles in the win for the Falcons.
After recorded just six hits in their last doubleheader outing, the Falcons tallied 14 hits in game one on Saturday. Fairmont State also had four stolen bases.
After AB scored two runs in the top of the second to take the early lead, Fairmont State responded with a nine-run second inning. The second inning was highlighted by a three-RBI double from Kassay, a two-RBI single from Worcester, and an RBI single from Baughman. Worcester also stole home during the inning, and a pair of runners were walked home late in the frame.
Cosgrove gave the Falcons a 12-2 advantage in the bottom of the third on a three-RBI double that she smashed into left field to clear the loaded bases. One inning later, Baughman homered with two runners on to make the score 15-2.
Mackenzie Maddy wrapped up the FSU scoring on an RBI single to left field that scored Schweitzer later in the fourth.
AB put up three runs in the top of the fifth, two of which were unearned, to make the final score 16-5 in favor of the Falcons.
Kassay (2-0) got the win for the Falcons, allowing just two runs and three hits during her start.
Ashley Strauss pitched the final two innings for the Falcons.
Game 2
In game two, the Falcons scored five runs late in the game to blank AB by a 5-0 margin.
With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Schweitzer broke the tie for good on a two-RBI double that brought home both
Hannah Workman and
Meadow Anderson. One inning later,
Courtney Moyer and
Isabella Yelle each scored on a passed ball, and Anderson brought home Fairmont's final run of the day on a sacrifice fly later in the sixth.
Workman led the Falcons with two hits in game two. Schweitzer and Worcester both had doubles in the game.
Cosgrove picked up her first win of the season for the Falcons on the mound, allowing just three hits in five shutout innings (2 K's).
Cierra Chastain pitched the final two innings for the Falcons and recorded three strikeouts.

Fairmont State will return to action on Monday afternoon against West Liberty. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.
