BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Top-seeded and No. 5-nationally ranked Concord scored twice from distance and once from a penalty spot to take a 3-0 win against Fairmont State in the MEC Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals on Thursday afternoon in Beckley. The setback is the first of the season for the Falcons during the spring 2021 season.
With the win, the Mountain Lions serve as the host for the title game for a second-consecutive season. Concord won the title in the fall of 2019 with a 2-0 win over Fairmont State. This year, the Mountain Lions will host Notre Dame College in the women's soccer final.
Fairmont State's spring 2021 season comes to an end with a 5-1-4 record.
Courtney Smith opened the scoring early with a shot from just outside the box past the keeper. Rachel Bell, who assisted Smith's goal, then added another marker midway through the second half from nearly the same spot as Smith's goal. The Mountain Lions continued to keep Fairmont State at bay and put the game away late with a third goal as Yasmin Mosby converted a penalty kick.
CU finished the game with an 18-10 lead in shots (9-5 shots on goal). Leah Marsh had five saves to preserve the shutout for the Mountain Lions, while Fairmont State's
Taylor Kennedy made six saves on the afternoon.
The Falcons held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kierra Kuzinski had three shots on goal and took five total shots to lead Fairmont State.
Ari Christiansen and
Mackenzie Gillispie also had scoring chances for the Falcons.
