Musgrove Homers Twice to Lead Fairmont State to 13-8 Win In Game Two

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- After getting edged in game one by a 5-4 margin, Fairmont State rolled to a 13-8 victory in game two to earn a split in Mountain East Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Frank Loria Field in Nutter Fort.

Game 2

In game two, Zach Musgrove hit a pair of home runs for Fairmont State, and the Falcons scored five runs in the third and six runs in the fourth to run away with the victory.

With AB leading 3-1 after two innings of play, Fairmont State took the lead for good in the third inning. PJ Lanham started the scoring for the Falcons on a single to left field that scored Jacob Goodnight from third. Goodnight tripled to lead off the inning to get into scoring position for the Falcons.

During the next at-bat, Musgrove hit a two-run home run to left center, his first of the game, to give the Falcons the lead at 4-3.

After a pair of walks and a single by Rafael Ramos to load the bases again later in the inning, Chris Green hammered a two-RBI single to left field to complete Fairmont's five-run third inning.

After a quick top of the fourth by the Fairmont State defense, the Falcons quickly added more runs in the fourth.

Lanham led off the inning with an infield single. With Lanham at first, Musgrove hit his second home run of the game to push Fairmont's lead to 8-3. But the scoring didn't stop there in the fourth inning as Ramos brough home a run on an RBI single, Vince Sabatino scored on a wild pitch, Spencer DeLawder plated a run on a sacrifice fly, and Goodnight hit an RBI double.

With Fairmont State leading 12-3 after four innings, AB would outscore the Falcons 5-1 in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome Fairmont's early advantage.

Fairmont State held a 14-7 advantage in total hits during the game. In addition to Musgrove's pair of home runs, Goodnight also hit a double and a triple for the Falcons.

Six different players recorded multiple hits in the game for the Falcons, including a 3-of-3 performance from Lanham. Goodnight, Musgrove, Sabatino, Ramos and Green also recorded two hits apiece in the game.

Logan Smith (2-6) picked up the win for the Falcons on the mound after recording four strikeouts and allowing just five hits (six runs) in five innings of work. Alex Pane recorded the final six outs for the Falcons and allowed just two hits (two runs) while striking out five.

Game 1

In the game one loss, Alderson Broaddus opened up a 5-1 lead after four innings of play following a pair of home runs by Taylor Cook and Chasen Claus in the third and fourth inning, respectively. Claus and Cameron Sheets also homered in game two for AB as the visitors cleared the fence four times during the afternoon.

Lanham drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double for the Falcons, while Green and Justin Brown both crossed home plate for the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth to close the AB advantage to just a single run at 5-4.

However, Fairmont State had just one base runner the rest of the way and were edged in Sunday's early contest to open the four-game series with AB.

Despite the loss, Fairmont State held a 7-5 advantage in total hits during game one. Lanham and Tyler Haskins both recorded two hits apiece in the game.

AB's pitching staff combined to 10 total strikeouts in game one. Michael Rotenberry fanned six batters during his start for the Falcons.

The Falcons and Battlers will wrap up their four-game MEC series on Monday afternoon at Frank Loria Stadium. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 noon.
