CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Fairmont State and Charleston wrapped up the 2021 softball season with a split on Saturday afternoon at the UC Softball Field in Charleston. The Falcons took game one by a 4-3 final score, while UC picked up a 6-3 win in game two.
Following the split, Fairmont State wraps up the regular season with a 23-15 overall record, including a 19-13 mark in conference play. UC wraps up the regular season with a 29-11 overall record (22-8 MEC).
Game 1
In game one with UC leading 3-0 after five innings of play, Fairmont State scored four unanswered runs to grab the win.
Meadow Anderson was walked in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, which brought home
Andie Baughman for the Falcons' first run of the game.
In the top of the seventh,
Torrie Gall drove in an RBI on a groundout that brough home
Haley McDaniel from third. Later in the inning,
Emily Riggs scored on a double steal with
Courtney Moyer to tie the game and eventually force extra innings in the game.
In the top of the eighth,
Hannah Workman scored an unearned run to put Fairmont State in front by a 4-3 advantage, a score that would hold and give the Falcons their 23rd win of the season.
Fairmont State had seven hits in game one, including two hits apiece from McDaniel and Baughman. Baughman had the only extra-base hit of the game with a double.
Kadi Cosgrove (7-3) earned the pitching win for the Falcons after allowing just two hits in the final three and one-thirds innings.
Game 2
Baughman continued her big day at the plate for the Falcons in the top of the first inning of game two, as the senior hammered a three-run home run to left field that scored Moyer and Riggs and gave the Falcons an early 3-0 lead.
However, UC scored six unanswered runs, three in the third and three in the fifth, to wrap up the victory and earn the split.
The Golden Eagles held a 9-5 advantage in hits during game two.
Fairmont State has already cliched a spot in next weekend's MEC Softball Tournament in Salem, Va. The league office will announce final seedings and matchups for the tournament following the conclusion of conference play this weekend.
