SALEM, Va. -- Fairmont State's run at the 2021 Mountain East Conference Softball Championship came to an end on Saturday afternoon when Notre Dame College plate three runs in the top of the seventh inning to advance in tournament play with a 6-3 win.
Notre Dame opened up the scoring when Mikaela Fording blasted a three-run home run to left field in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Fairmont State made the score 3-1 when
Abbey Ammons hit an infield single that brought home
Jessie Weaver from third base.
The Falcons pulled within a single run in the bottom of the fourth, this time following an RBI double by Isabelle Yelle that plated Weaver for her second run of the game. Weaver continued her big weekend in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to left field that scored
Courtney Moyer and knotted the score at 3-3.
With the score still tied at 3-3, Notre Dame took control in the top of the seventh with a trio of unearned run following an error and four Notre Dame hits during the half-inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons loaded the bases with just one out in the inning, but Notre Dame forced a pair of foul-outs to close out the win.
Both teams recorded nine hits on the afternoon, with
Emily Riggs and Weaver each going 3-for-4 for the Falcons at the plate. Riggs had a double, while Weaver tripled. Yelle also recorded an extra-base hit in the game with a double.
Caitlyn Kassay (7-4) suffered the loss for Fairmont State after pitching the final five and two-thirds innings in the circle for the Falcons during a relief appearance.
Kadi Cosgrove made the start and pitched one and one-thirds.
As a result of the setback, Fairmont State ends the 2021 season with a 24-17 overall record.
