Fighting Falcons Down Davis & Elkins, 68-59

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball picked up their ninth victory of the season with the 68-59 win over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday evening.

The Fighting Falcons are now 9-5 on the year and 7-2 in Mountain East Conference play while the Senators fall to 3-11 overall and 0-9 in conference action.

Kamrin Weimer grabbed a quick steal and finished at the basket to put the Falcons up 2-0, but D&E's Allie Taylor answered a couple of minutes later to tie the contest at three with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter. The two squads traded buckets through the middle of the first period before Fairmont State went on an 8-0 run to take the 13-6 lead and ended the first 10 minutes up 13-10.

In the second quarter, Taylor of Davis & Elkins knotted the score at 19 apiece after another three-ball, but Jertaya Hall and Weimer added five points for the Falcons to push the advantages back to five for Fairmont. D&E trimmed the margin to one point prior to the halftime buzzer sounding as the Falcons held the 31-30 margin after 20 minutes.

Out of the break, Sierra Kotchman earned three points swiftly as the Falcons maintained their lead and increased their advantage to 13 points after another triple from Kotchman. Madeline Huffman hit the back-end of two free throws to give Fairmont State a 14 point cushion, the largest lead of the game, but the Senators pushed back and only trailed by eight heading to the final 10 minutes.

The lead for Falcons jumped back and forth from a double-digit margin to a single-digit margin multiple times as Fairmont State only allowed Davis & Elkins within six points of the lead with 1:04 left in the contest. Weimer knocked in one more three with 34 seconds remaining as the final score was 68-59 in favor of Fairmont State.

Weimer led the Falcons with 17 points on the night with five three-pointers and added four rebounds to her totals. Kotchman (14 points) and Alyssa DeAngelo (10 points) joined Kotchman in double figures for the Falcons. Jertaya Hall scored eight points all in the first half as Madeline Huffman and Jalen Gibson each registered seven points with Gibbs picking up 11 rebounds in the contest.

As a team, Fairmont State shot 33.3% (24-72) from the field with nine made three-pointers and were also 11-19 from the free-throw line. The Falcons also forced Davis & Elkins into 24 turnovers on the night and scored 24 points off those turnovers.

For Davis & Elkins, Dream Cherry paced the Senators with 17 points and had four assists as Marissa Berlin earned a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards. Senator Allie Taylor had a double-double as well with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Senators finished the night with zero free-throw attempts also.

Fairmont State (9-5, 7-2 MEC) faces Frostburg State (3-13, 2-8 MEC) on Saturday, January 22nd at 2:00 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena on Dan Cava Court.
