PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- #23 Fairmont State Men's Basketball earned the 93-88 victory over Alderson Broaddus in overtime on Wednesday night to improve to 10-2 on the season and 5-2 in Mountain East Conference play.
Cole VonHandorf led the charge for the Fighting Falcons with a season-high 23 points inside Joe Retton Arena.
Alderson Broaddus' KJ Walker collected two points off a layup to extend the Battler lead to eight points with 15:31 to play in the first half. The Falcons used a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 21-20 off a layup from
George Mangas at the 8:08 mark of the first half.
Briggs Parris extend the advantage to five points for Fairmont State off a three-pointer, but AB closed the margin and tied the contest at 30 with 2:09 remaining in the first.
Isaiah Sanders knocked in a jumper to knot the score at 32 as the two sides went into the break deadlocked.
Out of the break, AB scored four points quickly to regain a four-point lead, but VonHandorf and the Falcons retook the lead at 43-41 after a made basket from VonHandorf.
Parris drained a three-pointer at the 12:01 mark of the second half to give the Falcons the 10-point cushion. The Battlers did not go away as they cut the lead to two points after a made jumper from Jalen Knott. AB tied the score at 70 after a John Grayson layup, but a VonHandorf jumper and Parris' triple pushed the margin back to five points in favor of Fairmont State. AB answered once more and sent the game to overtime after Knott hit a jumper from beyond the arc and evened the contest at 77.
In the overtime period,
Zyon Dobbs scored a quick basket off the tip. AB knotted the score up twice at 79 apiece and then at 81. Sanders collected a clutch jumper at the 2:04 mark to push the Falcons ahead 85-82 as Fairmont State survived the last-minute surge of the Battlers and collected their 10th victory on the year.
Fairmont State shot 34-77 (44.2%) from the floor with eight coming from beyond the arc. The Falcons were efficient at the line going 17-20 on the night. The Battlers held a 47.9% (35-73) clip from the field.
VonHandorf led all scorers with 23 points on 9-15 shooting and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Dobbs followed with 22 points on 10-20 from the floor. Parris (18 points), Sanders (17 points), and
George Mangas (10 points) joined their teammates in scoring in double-figures.
Seth Younkin had a huge game on the board with 10 rebounds with six coming on the offensive end.
Five Battlers scored in double-digits as Jalen Knott (21 points) led AB on the evening. KJ Walker (18 points), Jalen Collins (18 points), Tahleik Walker (17 points) and John Grayson (10 points) joined Knott in the scoring column.
#23 Fairmont State Men's Basketball (10-2, 5-2 MEC) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they host Notre Dame College (9-4, 6-1 MEC). Â
