Wrestling Roars Back for Season Opening Win

Coach Bonaventura gets his first win as Head Coach and the Falcons start 1-0

Philippi, W. VA., -- Wrestling started the Match down 10-0 against MEC opponent Alderson Broaddus but won 6 of the last 7 bouts to storm back for a 24-13 win at the 5th annual Hams & Slams event.

Losing the first three matches of the dual put your Fighting Falcons in a 10-0 but Freshman 149 Addison Courtney was up for the task as he delivered a huge win by fall to start the Falcons comeback. Sophomore 157 Navid Ighani had a workmanlike performance en route to a 11-3 major decision to even the score at 10. Freshman 165 Jude Childers stepped on the line and had a solid performance as well. He worked array of takedowns to win 13-5 to give the Falcons their first lead of the match 14-10. Freshman 174 Evan Thompson dropped a heartbreaker 4-3 and that made the score 14-13 heading into the last 3 matches.

RS Junior 184 Austin Gibson put on a impressive display wrestling en route to a 10-2 major decision win making the score 18-13. The dual was coming down the wire and two freshmen were up for the task. First up was Freshman 197 Aydan Edwards, he had an absolute war with a very tough opponent from Alderson Broaddus. In a tie match Aydan was able to come out on top of a scramble to get the decisive takedown and went on to win 4-3 and seal the dual meet victory for your Fighting Falcons. Freshman 285 Mason Atkinson put the finishing touches on the dual with an amazing 9-7 Overtime comeback victory.

With that win the Falcons start 1-0 for the first time since the program has been reinstated. It was also Coach Bonaventura's first win as Head Coach and this is what he had to say about the dual meet victory "It was a great day for Fairmont State Wrestling. It wasn't always pretty but our guys really battled hard and fought for every point. We were going after bonus points and had some big individual wins overall. We really came together as a team today and I am excited to see how we will continue to grow throughout the season."
