Fairmont State Women's Basketball Victorious in Buckhannon

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. –The Fairmont State women's basketball team (4-0, 2-0 Mountain East Conference) won its second-consecutive road game after defeating West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2, 0-2 MEC) on Tuesday night in Buckhannon.

Jalen Gibbs was one rebound shy of a double-double, posting 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Three of Gibbs' nine boards came off the offensive glass. Reigning MEC Player of the Week Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 24 points. DeAngelo went 8-for-13 from the field and drilled two shots from beyond the arc.

Katy Darnell turned in another double-digit scoring performance, netting 18 points. Jertaya Hall was the fourth FSU player to reach double-figures, scoring 11 points. Gracey Lamm dished out four assists and committed just one turnover.

The Falcons got to work early and went on a seven-point tear to build a 12-4 lead midway through the first period. Wesleyan cut the lead to four points with 90 seconds left in the opening quarter. Hall responded seven seconds later with a triple and Fairmont State led by seven at the end of one.

Madeline Huffman hit a triple to open scoring in the second quarter. DeAngelo extended the FSU lead to 14 when she swished a three-point basket. DeAngelo's second three of the quarter pushed the Falcons' lead to 19 points. The Bobcats trimmed the FSU gap to 14 points before the end of the first half.

Darnell, DeAngelo and Gibbs were responsible for the team's first nine points of the second half. Aaliyah Brunny poked the ball out of a WVWC guard and delivered the ball to Darnell, who finished on the other end with a fastbreak layup to put Fairmont State ahead 61-46 with three minutes left in the third. Fairmont State clung to a 69-56 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

The Bobcats did not cut the Falcons' lead to less than 12 points down the final stretch. Hall sank a triple with 3:30 left to put her team up 20 points. The Falcons collected a road MEC win and earned their first 4-0 start since 2015.

Fairmont State women's basketball will return to the hardwood on Sunday, Nov. 27 for a road nonconference game at Slippery Rock. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
