Institute, W. Va. — The Fairmont State soccer team moves on to the Mountain East Conference finals after a 1-0 win over No. 22 nationally ranked West Virginia State University. The game came down to a goal by Lesbia Alejandra Puerto Sorto with 13 seconds left in the game. This improves the Falcons season to 12-3-4.
The match was back and forth for 90 minutes. Fairmont State put 13 shots up, with 9 being on goal. West Virginia State gave the Fairmont defense a test with 20 shots, but with only 2 being on goal. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy made 2 saves on the night.
Towards the end of the second half, time seemed to be running down to a potential overtime game. Fairmont State gained a free kick in the 89th minute that they quickly set up for. The ball was bouncing around in the box but was cleared back out to Fairmont State's possession. Junior defender Gracie Smith served a dangerous ball into the box that freshman forward Puerto got onto. It was originally saved by the West Virginia State goalkeeper. Puerto was able to stick with it and it ended up in the back of the net at 89:47. This would end the game in favor of the Falcons 1-0, where they will move on to the MEC finals.
Fairmont State will face the 18-1-1 No. 15 nationally ranked Frostburg State on Sunday afternoon for the MEC finals between these two North division teams. The game is scheduled for 1:00 at the Bobcat Stadium in Frostburg, Maryland. The game can be streamed at https://www.mountaineast.tv.
