Falcons Fall to Glenville State on Senior Day

A strong first half is not enough for Fairmont State to claim the "Battle for the Bit".

FAIRMONT, W.VA. -- The Fairmont State Falcons (3-7, 3-6 Mountain East Conference) led by 10 points at halftime, but fell to Glenville State (6-4, 5-4 MEC) 38-36 on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Fairmont State Leaders
Connor Neal finished with 17 completions for 235 yards and two touchdowns. FSU tailback Myles Miree rumbled for 115 yards and two scores. Miree, a sophomore from Washington, D.C., eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the 2022 season. Kobe Harris logged 105 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Donte Cloude hauled in 59 yards and one score.

Defensively, Blair Brocton and Anthony Fordham each tallied eight total tackles. Brocton made 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage for a total of two yards. Kaire Umoja snagged his second interception of the season. Fordham, Quinton Young and Quadir Thomas each broke up a pass.

Glenville State Leaders
Pioneer quarterback Anthony Garrett threw for four touchdowns and 257 passing yards. Alfred Menjor led the Glenville State rushing attack with 64 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Zay Huff made three explosive catches for 135 yards, including a 74-yard pitch-and-catch. Orion Bonner racked up a pair of receiving touchdowns.

Seth Arnold led the defensive charge for GSU. Arnold was the lone player in double figures for tackles (13). Hayden Moore and Shaun Sterling both picked off a pass. Sean Bowers recorded a sack and a tackle-for-a-loss.

Inside the First Half
The Falcons received the opening kickoff and drove 63 yards on 12 plays. The Pioneer defense kept Fairmont State out of the end zone, and Sergei Buchheit gave the Falcons an early 3-0 lead. The Pioneers responded with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and pulled ahead, 7-3. A Glenville State personal foul and a 22-yard Donovan Washington run set FSU in the red zone. Miree finished the drive with a two-yard rush and put Fairmont State on top, 10-7. The Pioneers wasted no time responding on the ensuing drive. Garrett linked up with Huff for a 74-yard completion on the opening play of the drive that put Glenville State at the FSU six-yard line. Garrett hit Bonner for a six-yard completion to put GSU back in front. The high-scoring first quarter was capped off by a Neal 59-yard pass to Kobe Harris for six. The Falcons led by three points after one period of play.

Umoja stepped in front of Garrett's first pass of the second quarter that was returned to the Pioneer 40-yard line. After a Fairmont State first down, the Falcons faced a 3rd and 7 from the GSU 21-yard line. The Pioneers' defense stepped up with a 10-yard sack that forced Fairmont State to go for it on 4th and 17. The Pioneers forced a turnover on downs on the next play. The next three possessions resulted in a punt for each team. The Pioneers forced a fumble and had a chance to put points on the board before the end of the first half. The GSU offense lost four yards on the next three plays and sent the punt unit on the field. The Pioneers decided to run a fake punt on 4th and 14. Jeremiah Taylor chased down Avery Book two yards behind the sticks for a turnover on down with less than two minutes remaining in the half. The Falcons faced a 4th and 2 at the GSU 47-yard line in the final seconds of the half. Neal scrambled and threw a dart to Cloude at the five-yard line. Cloude evaded a pair of Pioneer defenders and stretched the ball across the goal line for a Fairmont State score as time expired. The Falcons led 24-14 heading into the locker room.

Inside the Second Half
The Pioneers struck quickly and amassed an eight-play, 78-yard scoring drive in less than three minutes to open the second half. Garrett found Bonner for the second time on the afternoon for an 11-yard completion for six points. Sterling intercepted an FSU pass late in the third quarter that gave favorable field position to GSU. The Pioneers trailed 24-21 but were knocking on the doorstep of Fairmont State's end zone at the end of the third quarter.

Garrett went to Bonner on a third and goal pass from the four-yard line. Fordham kept Bonner out of the end zone, and GSU was forced to send kicker Josh Jones on the field for an 18-yard field goal. Jones' kick was successful, and the score was even at 24 early in the final quarter. The Falcons could not earn a first down on the next drive. On the FSU punt attempt, Brandon Penn broke through the line and blocked the punt that was recovered by Mark Shepherd for a 37-yard scoop and score to put GSU ahead. A pair of Pioneer penalties resulted in Fairmont State taking over at midfield for the ensuing drive. Moore picked off the first pass of the drive and erased Fairmont State's favorable field position. Garrett completed his fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon to Huff, and GSU held a two-score lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Fairmont State offense answered and went 76 yards in eight plays to trim the GSU lead to one possession. Neal concluded the drive by plunging into the end zone with a one-yard rush. The Falcons did not convert the extra point and trailed by eight points midway through the fourth quarter.

Following a GSU three-and-out, the Falcons entered Glenville State territory from a GSU pass interference penalty. FSU faced a crucial 3rd and 10 on the Glenville 36-yard line. Neal converted a swing pass to Naseem Pancheco for a 17-yard completion that put Fairmont State into the red zone. Miree finished the drive with a 12-yard gain and a seven-yard touchdown that put the Falcons within two points of the lead. FSU was unsuccessful on the two-point try, and Glenville State clung to a 38-36 lead. The Pioneers forced FSU to use a pair of timeouts and faced a 3rd and 15 with less than a minute remaining on the clock. Garrett came through with an 18-yard completion to Huff that sealed the game for the Pioneers.
