SALEM, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State volleyball team (28-4, 13-3 Mountain East Conference) cruised to a three-set victory over Salem (0-31) on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. With the victory, the Falcons set a school record in winning percentage for a single season (.875).
Fairmont State Leaders
Madison Chapman and Emma Ludwig led the Falcons in the kills category, each tallying seven. Cayden Anschutz totaled 12 assists and eclipsed the double-digit assist mark for the second time this season. Karli Edwards had a match-high two service aces and accumulated seven digs. Josie Skinn led FSU with 10 digs, while Bryce Knapp snagged eight. Ludwig stuffed a pair of block solos and block assists.
Inside the Match
The Falcons claimed seven of the first ten points of the match. Ludwig tallied consecutive kills to push the Fairmont State lead to five. The Tigers cut the FSU lead 12-9. The Falcons responded with a four-point scoring run that was ignited by a Chapman kill. Salem trimmed the Falcons' lead to five points late in the opening set. A Keara Lewis kill, a Karli Edwards service ace and a Salem attack error ended the first set with going to Fairmont State, 25-17.
Fairmont State jumped out to an early lead in the second set. Ludwig launched another kill en route to a 7-3 FSU run. With Fairmont State holding a four-point lead, a Salem service error and two attack errors increased the Falcons' lead to seven. Kills from Ludwig and Baylie Ostvig closed out the second set with a 25-17 Falcons win.
With the third set score at 7-4 in favor of the Falcons, Joey Borelle ripped consecutive kills that boosted the Fairmont State lead to 11-4. Borelle's third kill of the set pushed the Fairmont State lead to seven, and a Salem bad set increased the Falcons' lead to 15-7. The Falcons amassed a key five-point run late in the third set that featured a trio of kills from Chapman that pulled the Falcons ahead by 11 points. Fairmont State took the final set by a score of 25-14.

The Fairmont State Falcons will compete in the MEC Volleyball Championship on Thursday (Nov. 10) versus Davis & Elkins at 7:30 p.m. The MEC Volleyball Championship will be held at the Wehrle Innovation Center on the campus of the University of Charleston.
