FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State men's basketball team (5-3, 3-3 Mountain East Conference) led by four points at the end of the first half, but fell to Glenville State (6-4, 3-3 MEC) on Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon from Joe Retton Arena.
Isaiah Sanders, who scored his 2,000
th career point in the game, led the Falcons with 18 points and made four three-point baskets.
David Jolinder added 16 points and totaled three blocks.
Fonz Hale finished with 12 points and
Tariq Woody scored 10 points and collected six rebounds.
Zyon Dobbs dished out seven assists.
The Pioneers jumped out to a five-point lead after Jacquez Yow converted a triple. After a
George Mangas offensive board, Dobbs found Jolinder for a three and Fairmont State evened the score at 15. The Falcons claimed the lead after Sanders sank a fastbreak three-point basket on the next possession. Sanders nabbed a steal, and
Seth Younkin made a turnaround jump shot to boost the Fairmont State lead to five points.
Hale's driving layup with 8:55 left in the first half put Fairmont State up seven points. After taking a charge on the defensive end,
Tommy Williams made a jumper to give Fairmont State an 11-point advantage. GSU managed to cut the Falcons' lead to four points at the end of the first half.
Sanders continued to find success from beyond the arc in the second half and made a three-pointer for the first Fairmont State points of the second half. Hale reached double-figures after making a jumper to put the Falcons up 49-42. Sanders dished out an assist to Mangas to put the Falcons up by nine points. GSU went on a 7-0 run and trailed by one point with 14:14 left in the second half. Williams increased Fairmont State's lead to four points following a three-point basket at the 13:39 mark.
The Pioneers earned their first lead of the second half after Freddie Word made a shot from beyond the arc. Glenville State led by three points midway through the second half. Sanders made his fourth three-pointer of the game and put the Falcons back in front. A three by Woody and a Jolinder dunk gave the Falcons a six-point advantage with 7:33 on the clock. The Pioneers rallied and forced another lead change from a Jordan Smith triple. Dobbs delivered a clutch three and Fairmont State pulled ahead by one point with three minutes remaining. Neither team scored until Woody converted a free throw that put the Falcons ahead 83-81. The Pioneers closed the game with a 7-0 run and came away with a road MEC win.
Fairmont State men's basketball will travel to Pennsylvania for a nonconference game at Shippensburg on Tuesday (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m.
