Strong Perimeter Shooting Leads Fairmont State in 76-67 Win over California (Pa.)

The Fighting Falcons sank 12 shots from beyond the arc in Monday's nonconference win.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (7-3) made a season-high 12 three-point baskets in Monday (Dec. 12) afternoon's 76-67 win over California (Pa.) (4-4) at Joe Retton Arena.
 
Five Falcons drained shots from beyond the arc in the contest. Alyssa DeAngelo led the outside shooting effort with five three-point baskets and netted a game-high 27 points. Jertaya Hall converted a trio of three-point baskets and Madeline Huffman went 2-for-2 from long distance. Leslie Huffman and Katy Darnell both chipped in a triple. Fairmont State swished three triples in each quarter.
 
Hall (16 points), Darnell (13 points) and Madeline Huffman (11 points) all joined DeAngelo in double figures. Fairmont State collected 13 steals, with Darnell tracking down six steals. Darnell led Fairmont State on the glass and hauled in eight rebounds. Madeline Huffman and Darnell combined for 11 assists. The Falcons totaled 18 assists in the contest.
 
With the score tied at 15 in the first quarter, the Vulcans closed out the period on a 9-4 run and led by five points. Leslie Huffman's three in the second quarter put the Falcons within four points with 8:24 left in the half. Cal U scored on its next four possessions and opened a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter. The Falcons chipped away at the deficit and finished the first half on a 9-2 run thanks to scoring from Darnell and Madeline Huffman. The visitors led by five points at halftime.
 
The Vulcans extended the lead to 10 points after halftime and led 50-40 with 4:51 left in the third quarter. DeAngelo made a trio of three-point shots in as many possessions to trim the Cal U lead to three points. In less than 90 seconds, Fairmont State trailed by one possession. Jalen Gibbs made a putback layup at the end of the third quarter, and the Falcons trailed by one point.
 
DeAngelo began the final quarter by making her fifth three-pointer of the game, and the Falcons regained the lead for the first time since the 3:34 mark in the first quarter. The Vulcans answered and pulled back ahead with a triple after a steal. After a Hall steal, DeAngelo found Huffman, who made her second three-pointer of the game to put the Falcons ahead 62-61 with 4:48 to go. Cal U made two free throws on the ensuing possession and led 63-62. Hall drove the lane and picked up a bucket with a foul. She completed the three-point play and Fairmont State held a two-point lead with less than four minutes remaining.
 
Hall continued her scoring run and made her third three-pointer of the game to put the Falcons ahead by two scores. The Vulcans would not come within three points down the stretch, and the Falcons extended the lead from free throws made by DeAngelo and Madeline Huffman. The Falcons won by nine points in the nonconference dual.
 
The Fighting Falcons will fly to Hawaii this week and will meet Hawaii Hilo on Saturday (Dec. 17). The game will start at 7:15 ET / 2:15 HT from the "Aloha State".
