Gibbs & Darnell Record Double-Doubles in Win at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (6-2, 4-1 Mountain East Conference) secured a 78-69 road conference win at Concord (2-6, 1-4 MEC) on Tuesday (Dec. 6) evening at the Carter Center in Athens, W.Va.

Jalen Gibbs and Katy Darnell both achieved double-doubles in the Fighting Falcons' victory. Gibbs earned her second double-double in one week and netted 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Five of Gibbs' 11 rebounds came from the offensive end. Darnell finished with 13 points and 13 boards to complete her second double-double performance of the season.

Alyssa DeAngelo led Fairmont State with 17 points, which included shooting 6-of-13 from the field. DeAngelo has reached double-figure point totals in all eight games this season. Aaliyah Brunny (14 points) and Jertaya Hall (11 points) rounded out the five Falcons who finished the game with double-digit point totals in the scorebook.

Madeline Huffman and Leslie Huffman combined for nine assists. Madeline Huffman distributed six assists and came away with a steal, while Leslie Huffman added seven points.

Brunny drove in for a layup and got the bucket to go with a foul at 6:25 in the first quarter. Brunny completed the three-point play that gave Fairmont State its first lead of the evening. After Concord regained the lead, Gibbs contributed three-straight points to put the Falcons ahead, 12-10. Concord ripped off six unanswered points to pad a four-point lead. The home team held a 22-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Madeline Huffman found Brunny in transition for a triple to pull Fairmont State ahead 27-25 early in the second quarter. Both teams suffered a scoring drought for the next three minutes. Hall and Darnell each scored layups that put the Falcons up six points. Leslie Huffman's three-pointer with 1:46 was the last field goal of the first half, and Fairmont State led 36-32 following one half of play.

The Mountain Lions reclaimed the lead when Jaisah Smith completed a three-point play in the opening moments of the third quarter. A pair of free throws by DeAngelo and a Hall layup put the Falcons up by three points. DeAngelo sank her second three of the contest with 1:48 left in the third quarter to put the Falcons ahead by six points.

Madeline Huffman dished out a pass to a wide-open DeAngelo, who drilled a three that opened the fourth quarter. Concord closed the gap to four points after an Alexis Phillips layup with 4:56 on the clock. Hall, DeAngelo and Darnell completed a six-point run that solidified a 10-point cushion for the Falcons. The Mountain Lions could not come within one possession of the Fairmont State lead down the stretch, and the Falcons won by nine points.
