ATHENS, W.Va. -- No. 12 Fairmont State Men's Basketball used a nine-point swing in the second half at Concord University to complete the 82-80 comeback over the Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.
Isaiah Sanders paced the Fighting Falcons with 18 points on 8-15 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in the contest.
Zyon Dobbs followed with 17 points as
Seth Younkin (15 points),
Briggs Parris (13 points), and
Cole VonHandorf (12 points) each contributed in double-digits in the scoring column.
George Mangas chipped in seven points on 2-4 from the field. The Falcons shot 60.71% (17-28) from the floor in the second half to secure their 18
th victory of the season and 13th in MEC contests.
Fairmont State held a seven-point cushion with 12:42 remaining in the first half as Concord clawed their way back into the game and tied the score at 25 after a made free throw from Jevon Laidler. The Mountain Lions took their first lead of the game on the next free throw opportunity from Laidler as CU extended the advantage to three points after a layup by Lual Rahama. A three-pointer by Ethan Heller doubled the margin to six over the Falcons and another one from beyond the arc by Concord's Brandon Kennedy pushed their lead to nine with 6:42 to play in the opening half.
Seth Younkin stopped the run on a made free throw but Concord quickly added five points to their point totals as the Mountain Lions led 41-28.
The Falcons endured the solid first-half play by Concord as they only trailed by seven points after a made layup from Younkin 43 seconds before halftime.
Sanders and his teammates turned the offensive pressure up out of the break as the Falcons regained the lead on a made layup by Sanders with 14:47 remaining in the contest. The lead was traded between the two squads twice before Sanders kicked in a three-pointer to five Fairmont State the 59-56 advantage. VonHandorf added two free throws for the Falcons to increase the margin to five points with 9:21 remaining. Concord down the stretch of Saturday's contest cut the lead back down to five points after the Falcons had a ten-point margin with 2:24 left in the second half. Concord's Amare Smith scored a layup with 17 seconds remaining to only trail by one, but Mangas hit the front-end of his two free-throw opportunities as a missed three-pointer by Mountain Lion Matt Weir gave the Falcons the 82-80 victory inside Concord's Carter Center.
No. 12 Fairmont State Men's Basketball (18-3, 13-3 MEC) remains on the road as the Falcons head to Notre Dame College (13-9, 10-6) for a Wednesday night clash with the Falcons at 7:30 p.m. inside NDC's Murphy Gymnasium.
