Men's Basketball Finishes Season in NCAA Atlantic Region

INDIANA, Pa. -- Fairmont State Men's Basketball faced a tough test in the form of California University of Pennsylvania in the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex today as the Fighting Falcons fell 95-74.

Fairmont State finished the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 23-8 and 16-6 in the Mountain East Conference play. The Fighting Falcons also knocked off West Liberty on the road on January 15th 100-97 as the Hilltoppers were ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time.

Isaiah Sanders collected a three-pointer with 18:32 remaining in the first half, but the Vulcans answered off a jumper by Brent Pegram. Cal (Pa.) to 27 points off a fastbreak layup by Zyan Collins at the 3:59 mark. Sanders knocked in another three-pointer to cut the deficit to 17 points as Fairmont State trailed 52-35 at the break.

Zyon Dobbs made two free throws to cut the Vulcan advantage to 12 points with 15:16 left in the second half. Cal (Pa.) answered once more and secured the 95-74 victory on Saturday afternoon.

George Mangas led the Falcons with 18 points in the contest as Sanders and Dobbs each had 17 points. Cole VonHandorf scored 15 points in his 140th game played at Fairmont State. 

Philip Alston of Cal (Pa.) had a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds in the win and Collins chipped in 20 points for the Vulcans.

Cal (Pa.) will now advance to the Atlantic Region semifinals as the Vulcan will match up with MEC member West Virginia State at 5 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

Fairmont State closes the 2021-22 season with 23 wins and will look to build towards another successful season in 2022-2023.
