Softball Falls in Doubleheader with Davis & Elkins on Sunday Afternoon

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball dropped two Mountain East Conference games against Davis & Elkins on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Falcons fell 5-4 in the first game and 8-2 in the day's second contest.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 4, Davis & Elkins 5)

Davis & Elkins scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning of the first contest to take the 3-0 lead at Duvall-Rosier Field.

The Fighting Falcons answered with one run in the top of the third as Peyton Wetherholt singled to the shortstop that scored Hannah Workman on the play. D&E rallied with one run in the bottom of the third to regain the three-run advantage.

Emily Riggs hit a three-RBI triple as Workman, Brooke Schmitt and Jordan Novak all scored on the hit. The Senators once again rallied in the bottom of the fourth as Senator Sharon Morales homered to center field for the go-ahead run.

Caitlyn Kassay lost in the pitching circle for the Falcons going three innings and allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned), two walks, and three strikeouts. Ally Maddy came in relief going three innings and striking out one batter on the afternoon.

Courtney Moyer and Carlie Schlosser joined Riggs and Wetherholt with hits in the first game as Riggs had three RBIs with Wetherholt chipping in one.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 2, Davis & Elkins 8)

Davis & Elkins carried confidence into the day's second game as the Senators prevailed 8-2 on Duvall-Rosier to take the doubleheader.

D&E pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first as the Falcons answered with one run of their own in the top of the second. Allie Prady grounded out to the second base as Katy Darnell touched home plate after a triple the prior at-bat.

The Senators tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second to hold the 5-1 lead. Ashley Strauss singled to center field to score Workman as the Falcons trailed 5-2 in the top of the third. 

Davis & Elkins took the final by a score of 8-2 after adding three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Shelby Reed got the start in the second contest of the day for the Falcons going one and two-thirds innings pitched as she allowed three hits, five runs (three earned), four walks, and one strikeout. Strauss came in relief of Reed going 4.1 innings on the day with three hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and two strikeouts.

Fairmont State (4-10, 0-4 MEC) heads to Greensburg, Pa. for a non-conference doubleheader with Seton Hill (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 23rd. The doubleheader is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
