Baseball Takes Two From Notre Dame on Saturday Afternoon

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State baseball wrapped up a four-game set with Notre Dame College earlier today as the Fighting Falcons collected two wins on the afternoon. Dylan Gongola hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning of the first inning and Fairmont State claimed the 5-3 decision in the second game after a solid pitching effort by Wil Mullins.

Fairmont State is now 19-16 on the 2022 campaign and 14-6 in Mountain East Conference action while NDC goes to 18-19 on the year and 13-7 in MEC contests.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 5, NDC 4 F/8)

The Falcons rallied in the seventh inning of game one today as Justin Brown hit a two-run home run to even the score at four apiece, before Gongola walked the contest off in the eighth with a single.

Logan Smith started on the mound for Fairmont State as Notre Dame scored three runs in the top of the second to lead 3-0. The Maroon and White chipped away at the three-run deficit in the bottom half of the third as Zachary Musgrove tripled down the right-center gap to plate Ryan Goff. Dwayne Thomas followed Musgrove with a two-out double down the left field line as the Falcons trailed by only one run.

NDC tacked on one more run in the fourth inning after Alex Mora reached on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the seventh, PJ Lanham led off the inning with a single to right field on a two-strike count. Spencer Delawder advanced Lanham in scoring position on perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Justin Brown rallied the Falcons with a two-run home run to right field off Notre Dame's Andrew Miller.

In the eighth inning, Ben Taylor worked around a two-out walk to shut Notre Dame down for the third inning in a row in his relief appearance.

Musgrove singled with one out to get aboard for Fairmont State as he advanced to second with a hit by pitch via Thomas. Isaac Miller pitch ran for Musgrove and came across to score the game-winning run off the bat of Gongola in the eighth inning as the Falcons won 5-4.

Smith pitched well the rest of his outing as he went 5.1 innings and struck out five batters in the start. Taylor earned his first win of the season after going 2.2 innings of relief as he did not allow a hit in his outing as well.

Seven different Fairmont State players had a hit in the contest with Musgrove leading the charge with two hits as Brown added two RBIs to his season totals.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 5, NDC 3)

Mullins added another quality start to his season as he went six full innings and only allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks. Mullins improves his record to 4-2 on the mound this season for Fairmont State. Steven Ricketts came out of the bullpen for the second straight day as he collected his second save on the 2022 campaign.

Tyler Haskins led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run over the right-field fence to give the Falcons the perfect beginning.

Notre Dame answered with runs in the second and third inning to gain the one-run advantage in the third inning. Fairmont State scored two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third as Brown doubled with one out to start the third inning rally.

Haskins plated Brown on his at-bat with a sharp single through the right side of the infield as the score was knotted up at two apiece. Haskins got into scoring position with a stolen base and gave the Falcons the 3-2 lead after Musgrove lined a shot to center field.

In the top of the fifth, NDC loaded the bases with one out and scored one run to tie the score at three apiece. Mullins was able to work around the jam with a double play on his next batter as Notre Dame's Nick Petrolla hit into the inning-ending double play.

Fairmont State got the momentum back in its favor in the fifth inning as Musgrove sent a no-doubter over the left-field fence to give the Falcons the go-ahead runs at 5-3.

In the sixth inning, NDC led off with a single center field, but the runner was quickly erased with another 6-4-3 double play. Mullins ended his day with nine groundouts.

Ricketts closed the door on Notre Dame's two-out rally after giving up a walk to Nick Farrell. Ricketts faced a quality batter in Ben Ross, but his fly ball to left field was caught by Musgrove to end the game at 5-3 in favor of Fairmont State.

The Falcons (19-16, 14-6 MEC) will now head to Philippi, W.Va. on Saturday and Sunday of next week for a four-game set with Alderson Broaddus. The first pitch from Jack Funk Field is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
