Fairmont State Baseball Walks Off Second Game to Register Two-Game Sweep of Concord

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Baseball used a walk-off hit in the second game of today's doubleheader with Concord University to earn the sweep over the visiting Mountain Lions.

The Fighting Falcons are now 14-13 on the season and 9-3 in Mountain East Conference contests. Concord falls to 17-10-1 on the year and 7-5 in MEC play.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 8, Concord 6)

In the opening game of Sunday's contest, the Fighting Falcons used a three-run fifth inning to collect the 8-6 victory against the Mountain Lions. Bryan Camacho earned the win in relief after going two solid innings and lowered his season ERA to 1.93.

Concord got on the board first after Zach Saryeldin scored on a wild pitch via Logan Smith in the first inning.

Fairmont State was able to even the score at one apiece after Justin Brown led off the third inning with a double down the left-field line. Tyler Haskins bunted on his at-bat as Brown scored from second on the play. Zachary Musgrove singled with two outs but the Falcons were not able to score the go-ahead runs in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Anthony Stehlin singled to third base to start the inning, but was caught stealing at second base for the first out. Concord's Dupont reached on a fielding error via Vince Sabatino and the Mountain Lions scored all five runs in the top half of the inning with two outs to take the 6-1 advantage. MJ Hunter doubled down the right-field line to clear the bases and give Concord the 4-1 lead. Saryeldin hit a single to center field to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Mountain Lions.

The Falcons did not go away quietly in the fourth as Fairmont State knocked four runs in the bottom half of the inning. PJ Lanham led the frame off with a single up the middle. Lanham scored on a single to center field via Brown to cut the Mountain Lion lead to four runs. Haskins followed with a single to right field as Cade Sikoski reached home on the play. Noah Canterbury singled in Brown and advanced Haskins to third to make the line, 6-4, for Concord. Musgrove reached on an error to continue the scoring for Fairmont State as the Falcons only trailed by one run through four innings.

Camacho came in the fifth inning and was able to work around two Mountain Lions reaching base to go to the bottom half for Fairmont State.

Lanham led the fifth frame with a walk and Sabatino put him in scoring position on a bunt single. Sikoski laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners 90 feet on the base paths. Brown scored Lanham on his at-bat after a groundout to Concord's shortstop as the score was knotted up at six apiece.

Canterbury reached on a fielding error by the Mountain Lions' second baseman as two Falcons scored on the play to give Fairmont State the go-ahead runs at 8-6.

Camacho trotted back out for the sixth inning and left two more Mountain Lions on base after striking out Fortique in the frame.

Steven Ricketts came in to close the door in the seventh as he stranded a Concord runner on the basepaths after two straight outs to earn his first save on the season.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 1, Concord 0)

The second game of today's twin bill turned into a pitching duel as Wil Mullins went the distance for Fairmont State. The Falcons walked off the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning after Dylan Gongola was able to score from first on a bunt single via Sabatino.

Mullins and Concord's starter Jacob Nester were both dealing through the majority of the game as Nester only allowed three baserunners through the first four frames.

In the bottom of the fifth, Haskins walked with two outs as Ryan Goff advanced him in scoring position with a single to right field. Goff and Haskins advanced to second and third respectively on a pass ball, but CU's Nester worked out of the jam after a groundout to end the inning.

Mullins was also able to work around trouble in the next inning after Concord's Stehlin led the inning off with a single to left field. Stehlin moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt via a pitch hitter, but Stehlin was left stranded once more after two consecutive outs by Mullins ended the scoring threat.

The Falcons moved to the bottom of the seventh deadlocked in the scoring column as Dylan Gongola reached base with a lead-off walk. Sabatino then singled to the pitcher and Gongola was able to score after a throwing error by Concord's Nester.

Mullins went seven full innings as he scattered three hits and struck out four Mountain Lions on the afternoon. Four Falcons collected hits in the second game as Goff, Canterbury, Dwayne Thomas, and Sabatino each added hits.

Fairmont State (14-13, 9-3 MEC) is back on the diamond next Saturday, April 9th as the Falcons open divisional play with Wheeling University (11-16, 7-5 MEC). The first pitch from Bridgeport is at 1 p.m. with both Saturday and Sunday being doubleheaders.
