FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball hosted the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader. WLU took both contests both a final score of 4-2 with the second game going nine innings.
The Fighting Falcons are now 9-13 on the season and 5-7 in MEC contests while the Hilltoppers improve to 20-12-1 on the 2022 campaign and 10-3 in conference play.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 2, WLU 4)
Hannah Workman doubled to start the one-out rally for the Falcons in the bottom of the first.
Peyton Wetherholt had a productive out after a groundout to second base as Workman advanced to third.
Emily Riggs hit a two-out RBI single to give Fairmont State the one-run advantage in the first inning.
In the third inning, Riggs added an RBI double to put the Falcons on top 2-0 as Wetherholt scored on the play.
West Liberty cut the deficit to one run off a solo home run by Hilltopper Annie Paterson and tied the score at two as Anna Welsh sent a ball over the outfield fence.
The Hilltoppers scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning as WLU led 4-2 after the top of the sixth. Fairmont State was unable to score any more runs in the contest as the Falcons fell 4-2 in the opening game on Sunday.
Shelby Reed threw five innings in the start of game one as she received the no-decision as she only allowed two runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out one Hilltopper.
Ally Maddy registered the loss in the circle after going two innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits.
Riggs led the Falcons with two hits in the game and produced both RBIs as Workman and
Alexa Andrews followed with one hit apiece.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 2, WLU 4 F/9)
The second of two contests on the day went the distance plus two extra innings as West Liberty topped the Falcons, 4-2.
Caitlyn Kassay threw a gem as she had five strikeouts and allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned).
WLU lifted the 0-0 tie with a double by Hilltopper Welsh in the fourth inning. Fairmont State gained the lead in the sixth inning at 2-1 after
Courtney Moyer scored on a groundout by
Brooke Schmitt.
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz led off the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by
Jordan Novak. Novak then scored on a pass ball to tie the score at one.
In the seventh inning, West Liberty scored the tying run after Katelynn Blair singled to plate Avery Becker.
Molly Schweitzer walked with two outs in the bottom half of the seventh inning as the Falcons tried to rally.
Katy Darnell reached first base on a hit by pitch and Waszkiewicz singled in her at-bat, but Wetherholt was thrown out at home on the play.
The Hilltoppers collected two runs in the ninth inning as the Falcons fell 4-2 once more to WLU.
Fairmont State returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Tuesday, April 5
th at 3 p.m. as the Falcons take on Slippery Rock in a non-conference doubleheader.
