SALEM, Va. -- Fairmont State softball picked up two victories on day one of the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament with a 10-8 victory over Davis & Elkins in extra innings and a 6-4 win over West Virginia State.
The Fighting Falcons now find themselves in the driving seat as the Maroon and White will play tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the first-seed West Virginia Wesleyan in the winner's bracket final.
GAME 1 Fairmont State 10, D&E 9 F/8
Fairmont State scored 10 runs in the final three innings of today's contest against the Senators to prevail 10-8 in the opening round of play. The Falcons faced a 7-0 deficit before pulling off a historic rally in the sixth and seventh innings. Riggs scored the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning with a two-run double to the right-center gap as
Katy Darnell and
Hannah Workman touched home plate.
The first three innings of the eight-inning affair saw no runs scored by either side, but D&E put up a seven-spot in its home-half of the fourth inning to take the commanding 7-0 lead.
The Fighting Falcons held the Senators scoreless in the fifth inning as Darnell led off the top of the sixth with a single. Workman followed with a single of her own and advanced Darnell to second base. Riggs loaded the bases for Fairmont State with a walk and
Courtney Moyer got the Falcons on the board with a single to center field to plate two runs.
The inning continued with a sacrifice fly via
Carlie Schlosser to cut Davis & Elkins to 7-3. Moyer was able to advance on the flyout by Schlosser and rounded home on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4.
D&E added one run back in the sixth inning after a two-out hit by Linzey Allard.
Fairmont State found themselves in a similar position with Darnell leading off the seventh inning with a single to left field. Workman drew a walk and
Peyton Wetherholt doubled home both Darnell and Workman on her at-bat as the Falcons trailed by only two runs. Riggs cashed in on a home run to left field to tie the score at eight apiece. The game would head to extra innings as
Ashley Strauss worked around an error to keep the game tied.
In the eighth inning, Darnell singled to begin the one-out rally for the Falcons. Workman advanced Darnell to second base via a single to center field. Riggs once again came up clutch with a two-RBI double to the right-center gap to give Fairmont State its first lead at 10-8.
The Senators were able to plate one run in the eighth inning, but a 6-3 double play gave the Falcons the 10-9 victory in extras.
Strauss earned the win in relief for Fairmont State as she went three innings of work while striking out one Senator in the morning session.
GAME 2 Fairmont State 6, WVSU 4
The Fighting Falcons looked to continue its momentum into the second game of the day with a winner's bracket game against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. Fairmont State defeated the Yellow Jackets by a final of 6-4 as
Alexis Thompson scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning with a single to second base.
WVSU registered a run in the first inning as Hannah Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly to make the game 1-0 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Riggs continued to answer the call with clutch hitting as she sent a ball over the left-field fence to give the Falcons the 2-1 advantage.
Fairmont State added one run in the fourth inning as
Isabella Yelle hit a two-out single to score
Alexa Andrews on the play and give the Falcons the two-run lead.
The Yellow Jackets got within one run once again with a sacrifice fly, but the Maroon and White plated one run of its own to hold the 4-2 lead.
WVSU's Emily Moore sent a two-run home run blast in the sixth inning to knot the score at four apiece, but for the third inning of the day, the Falcons answered back.
Thompson came up clutch for the Falcons with a two-out single up the middle as both Moyer and Riggs were able to score.
Caitlyn Kassay was able to work around a lead-off single in the seventh inning as Fairmont State went 2-0 on the day and heads to the winner's bracket final with West Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon.
The Fighting Falcons will play at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan with the winner of that game advancing to the MEC Championship Final scheduled for Sunday, May 8.
