Fairmont State Women's Basketball Drains 12 Three-Pointers in 82-65 Win over Davis & Elkins

The Fighting Falcons swished 12 shots from beyond the arc for the second time this season in Wednesday's victory.

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (12-6, 7-4 Mountain East Conference) converted 12 three-point baskets and earned an 82-65 win against Davis & Elkins (3-11, 3-7 MEC) on Wednesday (Jan. 18) evening at Joe Retton Arena.

Aaliyah Brunny earned a season-high 19 points and led all scorers, four of which were triples. Katy Darnell grabbed seven rebounds and netted 14 points on the evening. Leslie Huffman added nine rebounds and 10 points while shooting 6-for-6 from the line. Madeline Huffman, Jertaya Hall and Alyssa DeAngelo all chipped in 10 points offensively.

Hall started off the scoring for the Falcons with two three-pointers to put the Falcons up 6-3. DeAngelo and Brunny scored a three-pointer each, which pushed Fairmont State's lead to 17-10. DeAngelo knocked down a three-pointer to edge the Senators 21-14. Leslie Huffman made both of her shots from the charity spot to make the score 24-16 with 2:29 left in the quarter. Brunny drained her second three of the first quarter for her ninth point to round out the scoring for the first quarter, where the Falcons led 27-20.

The Senators started the second quarter with three buckets to even the score at 27-27 with 7:49 remaining in the half. Madeline Huffman converted on a shot from outside the arc to gain back the Falcons' lead. Leslie Huffman finished two layups right before Madeline Huffman went on to complete her second three-pointer of the quarter. The run pushed Fairmont State's lead to 37-27 with 5:47 to go. DeAngelo grabbed a steal that turned into a made jumper on the offensive end to make the score 42-29 with 1:01 left in the first half. The Falcons left the floor with a lead of 44-31 and made eight three-pointers in the half.

Darnell buried a three after the half that added to Fairmont State's lead. The Senators pushed on in their offense with an eight-point run. Darnell ended the D&E scoring run with 6:39 to go to make the score 52-41. Darnell continued her scoring run with a layup and a foul where she converted on her free throw attempt. Brunny swished two three-pointers for her fourth triple of the contest with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter. Jalen Gibbs and Brunny each tallied a bucket to put Fairmont State up 67-46 at the end of the third.

Darnell dished out an assist to Brunny for the first basket of the fourth quarter. The Senators went on a six-point uncontested run, which was snapped by a Gibbs layup to make the score 71-52 at the 5:44 mark. Hall drove the lane for a layup that came with a foul to push the score to 74-54. Gibbs and Hall converted for another layup each with 3:39 remaining in the game for a Falcons lead of 78-58. The Fighting Falcons secured an 82-65 victory over the Senators.

The Falcons will travel to Frostburg State this Saturday, (Jan. 21). Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
