DeAngelo, Gibbs & Darnell Combine for 58 Points in Fighting Falcons' Win Over NDC

Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 25 points, while Jalen Gibbs and Katy Darnell both recorded double-doubles in the Fairmont State victory.

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 25 points and Jalen Gibbs netted a season-high 19 points as the Fairmont State (10-4, 6-2 Mountain East Conference) women's basketball team picked up a 70-56 win at Notre Dame (Ohio) (4-11, 3-5 MEC) on Saturday (Jan. 7) afternoon at Murphy Gymnasium in South Euclid, Ohio.
 
DeAngelo sank five shots from beyond the arc and added four assists and a pair of steals. Gibbs pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, including eight from the offensive end. The power forward blocked two shots and forced a steal. Katy Darnell racked up her fourth double-double of the season. The senior guard finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and led all players with six steals.
 
The Fairmont State defense forced 23 Notre Dame turnovers and held NDC to a 10% shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Fairmont State outrebounded the home team by 16 in the victory.
 
The Fighting Falcons outscored NDC 10-2 in the opening five minutes of the contest. Gibbs tossed in the team's first eight points. A three-pointer from Hall and DeAngelo extended the Fairmont State lead to 16-6 with just over three minutes left in the first period. The home team closed the gap after an 8-2 scoring run and Fairmont State led 18-12 after the first 10 minutes. The Fighting Falcons led the entire second quarter but did not extend their lead to more than two possessions. DeAngelo continued to find her shot and scored 10 points in the quarter. Darnell found Gibbs for a layup and Fairmont State held a four-point lead at halftime.
 
With Fairmont State still holding a four-point edge midway through the third quarter, the Fighting Falcons ripped off 10-straight points. Zaniya Murray started the scoring spree with a layup at the four-minute mark. DeAngelo hit back-to-back triples and swished a pair of free throws to complete the Fairmont State run. DeAngelo found Madeline Huffman for a three and Fairmont State led 56-42 after three. NDC would not trail by fewer than 10 points in the final 10 minutes of play, and Fairmont State came out on top, 70-56.
 
The Fighting Falcons will return to the road on Wednesday (Jan. 11) in Wheeling for a game versus the Cardinals at 5:30 p.m.
