DeAngelo Pours In Career-High 39 Points in Fairmont State's 92-84 Victory at Seton Hill

DeAngelo made 19 free throws and shot 9-of-15 from the field.

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Alyssa DeAngelo netted a career-high 39 points as the Fairmont State (2-0) women's basketball team bested Seton Hill 92-84 on Saturday (Nov. 11) night in the final day of competition at the Atlantic Regional Crossover in Greensburg, Pa.

DeAngelo made 9-of-15 field goal attempts and knocked down 19-of-23 free throw attempts in her career performance. She added a pair of three-point baskets, two steals and an assist to lead her team to victory. Katy Darnell recorded 21 points and forced six steals to lead all players. Jalen Gibbs distributed five assists and was one point and one rebound shy from a double-double. Aaliyah Brunny compiled 10 points.

The Falcons were firing on all cylinders in the first three minutes of action. DeAngelo scored the first four points of the game on two free throws and a layup. Darnell finished a layup and Leslie Huffman swished the game's first three-pointer and the Falcons gained a 9-0 advantage. A pair of made free throws by Jalen Gibbs and a jump shot by Madeline Huffman increased the Fairmont State lead to 11 points with 2:32 left in the first quarter. DeAngelo was fouled at the buzzer and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line that brought the Fairmont State lead to 28-20 after one quarter. A Zaniya Murray steal led to a fastbreak layup for DeAngelo, which gave FSU its largest lead of the first half with 5:24 left in the second quarter. Fairmont State held a double-digit lead heading back into the locker room.

The Griffins answered out of halftime and cut the Falcons lead to three points in the third quarter with 6:23 on the clock. SHU captured its first lead of the game at the 5:23 mark and led 50-49. The Griffins extended the lead to as many as five points in the third period. DeAngelo put her team back in front with a layup and two free throws with 2:47 in the third. The Falcons clung to a 62-61 lead at the end of three quarters. Seton Hill scored the first four points of the final quarter and led 65-62 within the first minute. Brunny hit a clutch three-pointer that evened the score at 65-65. Darnell strung together five-straight points that completed an 8-0 run for FSU. Darnell swung a pass to Gibbs in the paint for a layup and the Falcons lead grew to six. Darnell slashed into the lane and finished a layup with 4:19 to go that put FSU up 80-72. The Griffins would not go away and narrowed the Fairmont State lead to two points with 1:54 remaining. DeAngelo took over and powered in for a layup to put her team back in front by two possessions. After Gibbs grabbed a defensive rebound on the next Seton Hill possession, DeAngelo skipped a pass to Gibbs for a layup and Fairmont State's lead increased to 88-82. DeAngelo swished four more free throws in the final minute of action and completed her career-high scoring night by sealing the win for the Falcons.

The Fairmont State women's basketball team will play in its home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 15) when the Falcons welcome Indiana (Pa.) to Joe Retton Arena. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. from Fairmont.
