WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Fairmont State (3-0) men's basketball team secured a 74-68 win at West Chester (1-2) on Wednesday (Nov. 15) night at Hollinger Field House in West Chester, Pa.
Zyon Dobbs led the Falcons with 18 points and was one assist shy of a double-double with nine. Dobbs made 11-of-18 free throws in his performance.
Tommy Williams swished four three-point baskets and poured in 16 points.
Cameron Whiteside registered 15 points.
Seth Younkin pulled down 10 rebounds off the glass to lead FSU.
Fairmont State shot 40.7% from the field on a 22-of-54 shooting performance and was held to a 17.7% shooting from beyond the arc in the first half (3-for-17). The Falcons improved its three-point shooting to 38.5% in the second half and made five triples in the final 20 minutes. The Falcons held the Rams to an 11.1% shooting night from downtown and only surrendered two three-point buckets to WCU.
Williams tied the score at 13-13 with a three-pointer at the 15:34 mark. The Rams reclaimed the lead and increased their cushion to a 27-19 margin with 9:18Â remaining in the opening half. Two buckets by Whiteside and a jump shot by Dobbs pulled the Falcons within two points at the 7:00 mark. WCU compiled a 9-2 scoring run and increased the lead to 36-27 with less than five minutes in the half. The Falcons rallied and closed out the first half on a 6-0 scoring run that was capped off with a Younkin layup on a fastbreak that was assisted by Dobbs. The home team led by three points at the break.
Williams sank a triple with 15:58 on the clock to pull the Falcons within two points, 44-42. After Williams tied the score at 44-44 on a jump shot, Dobbs dished a pass to Younkin in the lane for a layup to give the Falcons their first lead of the second half, 46-44 at the 13:37 mark. WCU recaptured the lead at the midway point of the second half and led 50-48 with 10 minutes to go.
David Jolinder skipped a pass to Whiteside on the perimitter for a three-pointer on a fastbreak to put Fairmont State back in front. Williams and Jolinder followed with a three-point bucket each to give the Falcons a 57-50 lead at the 7:08 mark. Two converted free throws each by Whiteside and Dobbs completed a 13-0 scoring run for the Falcons and gave Fairmont State its largest lead of the night, 61-50. The Rams managed to whittle Fairmont State's lead to three points with two minutes left in the second half.
Tyheil Peterson knocked down a pair of free throws to keep the Falcons ahead by two possessions with 1:34 on the clock. WCU responded with a layup to pull back within one score.
Colin Comer delivered a clutch three-point bucket on his first shot of the night that sealed the win for the Falcons. Fairmont State secured a 74-68 road win over West Chester.
The Falcons return to Fairmont and will welcome West Virginia Wesleyan in the Mountain East Conference opener on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon at 4 p.m. from Joe Retton Arena.
