Falcons Move to 4-0 with 79-62 Win Versus WVWC

Alyssa DeAngelo, Katy Darnell and Madeline Huffman reached double-figure point totals.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State (4-0, 1-0 Mountain East Conference) women's basketball team rolled to a 79-62 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan (2-1, 0-1) in its MEC opener on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.

Fairmont State made 11-of-22 shots from beyond the arc in the win. Alyssa DeAngelo showcased her long-range shooting by making five three-pointers and led the team with 21 points. Katy Darnell poured in 19 points and grabbed six boards. Madeline Huffman dished out a team-high seven assists and added 10 points. Aaliyah Brunny swished a pair of three-pointers and scored nine. Jalen Gibbs pulled down nine boards.

Bre Wilson converted the Falcons' first triple of the game with 6:23 in the first quarter and put FSU ahead by four points. Brunny kicked in a shot from beyond-the-arc at the 2:01 mark in the opening quarter to pull the Falcons ahead by seven. DeAngelo scored a layup that was assisted by Madeline Huffman that increased Fairmont State's lead to nine late in the first. The Falcons led 25-19 at the end of the first quarter. DeAngelo and Madeline Huffman hit consecutive three-pointers and pushed FSU's lead to 34-19 early in the second quarter. Madeline Huffman drove to the rim and finished a layup that put the Falcons ahead by 18 with just over three minutes remaining in the half. After a Brunny three-pointer, Zaniya Murray picked off a Wesleyan pass and dished a pass to Brunny, who scored a layup and was fouled. Brunny completed the three-point play and gave the Falcons a 22-point cushion. DeAngelo nailed a triple that ended a 9-0 scoring spree for the Falcons. Fairmont State led 52-31 at the break.

The Falcons maintained a lead of more than 20 points for the majority of the second half. DeAngelo knocked down another three-point bucket with 6:52 on the clock to keep the Falcons ahead 60-38. WVWC trimmed the Fairmont State lead to 16 points just before the end of the third quarter. The Bobcats would not trail by fewer than 15 points in the final quarter. Leslie Huffman converted a deep three-pointer and freshman Mackenzie Swayne scored her first collegiate points with a layup to put Fairmont State back in front by 20 points in the final minutes. A pair of Swayne free throws and one free throw by Carrie Rhodes wrapped up the scoring for the Falcons and Fairmont State improved to 4-0 with a 79-62 win.

The Fairmont State women's basketball team will play at Davis & Elkins on Tuesday (Nov. 21) evening at 5:30 p.m. in the team's final game before Thanksgiving break.
